Okay, I followed the instructions to open cmd.exe, then the rest of it, and device manager came up, but under properties on the unknowns, there is nothing new. What am I looking for?
Hi Cindy
There should be an extra tab with the info……
Try look at some of your other devices, does they show extra info?
Otherwise, sorry for joking abit, they are truly unknown
Hmm, you mentioned your graphics screwed all up with those new drivers. What about the onboard graphic on that PC?
Have you tried remove your card and see if the white squares are there after boot?
If your game for it, you could access the system information tool. It can be used for both soft / hard- ware.
How to use the tool, you can find located in the middle of this page
This problem is sure frustrating, and probably more so for you. And I am running low on ideas as to what it could be.
But lets hope a solution is around the corner.
I did check the details tab of the unknown devices, and saw no error code listed there, however the drivers are all generic from Microsoft dated 2001, and when I tried to update, the wizard told me it could not find any better drivers than the ones installed, of course. Going to system info tool now.
Let's take a step that may save you time and trouble.
It is safe and reversible if it does not give you the result you wish.
Open your CodeStuff Starters Remove the checkmark/tick from in front of the following items:
Adobe Gamma.lnk C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe Startup - Current User 1 Adobe Gamma Loader (Adobe Systems, Inc. Adobe Gamma Loader) Adobe Systems, Inc. For the Special Text item, we'll do something slightly different ctfmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe Registry - User Run 1 CTF Loader (Microsoft® Windows® Operating System) Microsoft Corporation
Start - Run - Control Panel - Regional and Language Settings Language(tab) - Details(button) - Advanced(tab) <– Place a checkmark/tick in front of the item: Turn off Advanced Text Services

Reboot your machine and notice whether or not the pesky "white panel" appears.
Report back here with results.
You will be able to use any of those "temporarily disabled" processes and applications in the future by manually starting them………. or you can re-Enable any/all of them via CodeStuff Starters.
Notice that we are leaving WinPatrol, Zone Alarm and Ad-Aware "Enabled" <– do not change these items
No White Box! No White Box! No White Box! It worked! I pasted in the info for ctfmon exactly as you had it typed. Also, I just downloaded the updates for Spybot S & D, and it contained a newer version, which I installed, I went to the start-up file that Spybot has and unchecked exactly the same things as in Start Up Stuff. Start up stuff had transferred the ctfmon value to spybot, but I noticed several ctfmon entries (none checked, or I unchecked), and in Paul Collins list it says that at least one of them had been installed by a trojan. So I guess I'll be going back to malware soon, although since I have been studying the hijack logs, I might take a crack at it myself. I still cannot open or view any connections in the network connections folder. Thank you Doug, I'm excited at no white box.
Cindy
I'm assuming the chipset driver for the NIC is on the HP site, if this is not correct, would you please tell me? I'm going there now. I ran a fast pc pitstop test and it still says my video is lousy. But since I don't play any games, should I care?
I must be an idiot, but the white box is back and I don't know how to re-install or even find the network interface card. Please help whenever you have time. Plus I just got a message that TCP/IP cannot be repaired for the 1394 ethernet connection because it's not enabled. And I cannot open either of the network connections to see what's going on.
Hi Cindy
Sorry to hear that, dang here we just thought it was gone….
I'm fresh out of any ideas as to why its re-occuring, but maybe Doug have some more avenues.
Personnally I would consider a hardware fault, so maybe a benchmark program may shed some light, + a memtest just in case.
Dunno how you feel about that, considering what you have already been through*. Not sure if a fresh install will do the trick, but you have tried so many drivers now, for alot of different things, I wouldn't begin to guess at how your system is doing at the moment.
Just my thoughts, as I mentioned earlier, fresh out of any software/OS-based solutions/ideas.
Kind regards Abydos
I just got the message in my email, and will try this right now. Thank you very much, I'll post back. Well, it did something, and once again the white box is gone. I still cannot get the connection link open for 1394 net adapter, because when I try to repair it I get the message, "Cannot be repaired because TCP/IP is not enabled". I look at the list of TCP/IP connections and there are three types, client, network and something else, so I do not know which ones to install.
Cindy
Here's the good part, I have restarted it a couple times and it boots all the way up in under a minute, with no white box. The only problem I am having is that there appears to be no driver installed for the 1394 adapter, except it says that it's working properly and the driver is a 2001 Microsoft driver. That is the same connection that says it cannot be repaired because there is no TCP/IP enabled. When I attempt to install the TCP/IP client, services and protocol, it says it needs a disk, so I put in my dvd and it says the location does not contain the specified information. If this is the worst that happens, I am ready to just let it be. Overall, as far as I know (and I run preventitive programs constantly as well as update everything more than once a week), the computer has no trojans, etc, boots up faster than it ever has, and everything else is working just fine. All these things are thanks to you who have helped - LD Tate, Doug, and Abydos. Oh, and the white screen is gone and I don't have a zillion unimportant programs on boot-up. I have managed to update most of the drivers, and I think I have come out way ahead. So if anyone has anything else they want me to try, I will be happy to do it, but I don't want to waste anyone's time because there are a lot of people in much worse shape than I am. Just the fact that this this pc boots up ready for use in one minute has me jumping for joy!
I will keep checking back, because I get e mail notifications, but stick me on a back burner because I am happy. It sort of annoys the back of my mind, but I will live with it. And thank you so very much to all of you. I am very grateful, and now I can get back to the classroom. THANK YOU LDTate, DOUG, & ABYDOS, you are the BEST!
Gratefully,
Cindy
