hi guys … was hoping i could figure this out … but, here i am with XP sp2 … we recently upgraded ISP to Verizon Fios which included Norton Security … what a mistake … 30 days free, my foot … 30 days frustration more like it.

So, uninstalled Norton … purchased and installed Zone Alarm Security Suite on 2 computers, same OS, but the secondary install detected a virus with the first scan … primary install doesn't reflect a problem (installed today 1/24/08)

Am still looking but i cannot seem to locate much information on this virus "not-a-virus:Downloader.Win32.PopCap.b" or a method for removing it, hopefully you can help resolve this without too much eyestrain.

I am new to HijackThis … but installed and ran it … log follows.

2/5/08 – What the Tech forum – LD Tate

Thank you so very much for responding, i was beginning to think this was a problem even you guys couldn't fix.
Just so you know, since the delay was as long as it was, i followed Castle Cops Self-Removal suggestions, but have had
0 success.

1/30 was the last time i checked my post only to find it had been viewed nearly 100 times but not yet received a response.
Have been offline until this morn when i noticed your response, again, thanks!!

Following the Castle Cops protocol, the following software has been run on this system: CCleaner, ATF Cleaner,
Spybot S&D 1.4, Windows Defender, AVG Anti-spyware and Zone Alarm Anti-Virus/Spyware Security Suite …
problem still un-resolved.

Following are 3 HJT's … first is the preliminary scan on 1/29 … second the finished (clean, i wish) HJT
following CC protocol 1/30 and last but not least HJT run prior to this post 2/5/08.

Quite honestly, i have no idea what i am doing, only following directions. At this point, i am confused, lost, and
too scared to do anything with this system until it's working properly. Fortunately so far, i've been lucky not to
encounter this type of situation in the past and am clueless regarding a repair.

Ok, a little history may help … early Dec 07, ISP was upgraded from standard DSL to Verizon Fios service which included
Norton Security Suite free for 30 days … prior to change, i ran Spybot S&D 1.3 w/upgrades in conjunction with Zone Alarm's
free firewall with no problems or incidents. Once Norton on board, the 30 days free was more like 30 days frustration so we
deleted Norton, purchased and installed Zone Alarm Security Suite and it's first scan detected the virus …
"not-a-virus:downloader.Win32.PopCap.b" … ZA could not repair, quarantine or delete the file.

I have no idea what i'm dealing with or how to get rid of it. The OS is XP Home w/SP2 and is a re-install … perhaps I
immunized the problem when re-installing Spybot 1.4, or maybe need to upgrade something i missed during re-install …
needless to say, i'm confused.

Some of what the system is doing or not doing would be: first noticed with first ZA scan (no problem noticed prior) …
homepage is Yahoo yet no Yahoo entry appears in ZA program control, Yahoo games link does not work / mssg appears
"cannot copy file", homepage video ad feeds do not appear at all, tried to post on ZA forums but could not / mssg about
enabling cookies even though they were enabled, ummm with each system boot the hardware installer finds and wants to install
eight (8) PCI Simple Communication Controllers (i generally cancel the process, open device mgr and delete the PCI devices
manually) – i have no clue what these are or why they are consistently detected and the system does not recognize the USB
connected Logitech keyboard even though it was installed with cd.

For the most part, it seems to function well in the sense i've been able to link to Yahoo homepage, email, weather, sports,
finance, even the adult site I frequent, Adult Friend Finder, search engine seems to work fine and peripherals don't indicate
any problem … After following CC protocol, of course i tried to link to Yahoo games, Zuma to be exact and got nowhere but
Zone Alarm's view scan immediately appeared and detected the same "not-a-virus:Downloader.Win32.PopCap.b", with no option
available. Disgusted, confused and feeling helpless, I shut down the system and gave my brain a break for the weekend.
Only this morning, i was gonna click "Blair's - if no response in 5 days, click here" link when i noticed you had responded.

All i could think was "Wooooohoooo, help is on the way !!" So, i am patient, take your time but know that i ANXIOUSLY await
your response !! :)

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.

Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Following the ATF cleaner and scans it doesn't seem to boot differently … home page is still missing the video ad (not that i mind) … homepage does seem to be less full onscreen … links to news, weather, sports all working well but still cannot access Yahoo's Zuma game – page advances to load request then blank white page appears with NOTE: Zuma requires Internet Explorer and Windows (yeah, ok .. i thought i had both) – then i noticed the install activeX notice bar and proceeded with the install only to be notified: Setup cannot copy the file popcaploader.dll … says the path is: C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD1.tmp … gives option to change path and try again but will not proceed to game without. Once cancelled, Zone Alarm's scan view appears with our "not-a-virus:" detected as an Active Item - Virus … still won't quarantine, repair or delete … ZA Error note does appear and says: System cannot find path specified.

Checked and sent one email without incident … any ideas ??? I haven't gone surfing or chatting or done any personal business on this machine since problem first detected so i'm not sure about it's overall performance … seems to be generally ok.
Any particular questions i can try to answer ???
Thank you, as always … be blessed
Granny Mouse
Currently, that would be Zone Alarm Security Suite … recently installed / mid-January 08

Here's an odd note … have 2 computers / 1 infected (or so it says) … Norton was UNinstalled and ZA was installed on both systems within 48 hours … same OS … one Compaq (infected) / one Dell … amazingly enough, virus/spyware scans were run on the Dell this am and found the same "virus: not-a-virus:downloader" … HOWEVER, the Dell quarantined the virus without any problem … upon inquiring the 'More Info' key, a screen from Kaspersky lab appeared showing 1st detected and modification info for said virus … apparently this was originally addressed back in 2005 but no direct repair or removal was indicated.

Honestly, i ran outta time before i could read all the info and that computer room is currently asleep for the evening … can re-check details in the am if needed.

I truely don't understand why the quarantine worked on one computer and not the other … leads me to think the problem may be incorrect program control permissions (within Zone Alarm) … or maybe i "immunized" the virus without knowing it was there, when previously downloading Spybot … hmmm, sure glad you know what you're doing !!!! :)

Question: Should i have a secondary antivirus on board ?? Most of what i've read says that could lead to conflicts. If you could recommend a good one for free, i'm game to try anything at this point.

I am wondering … even though this thread is not ZA affiliated, if i gave you the permissions currently associated with MSIE for example, would you be able to advise if an entry should be changed ?? I only ask cause i cannot post on the ZA forums with this computer, presently and for some reason this problem seems "Operator induced" :)

Patiently awaiting your GURUness !!!
Mouse
I don't use ZA so the settings wouldn't mean anything to me. You might be able to check the settings on their website.

Nothing is showing in the HJT log but we can do some more looking.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.

Also let me know how the computer is running now.
Good day and thanks for the next step … will touch base as soon as the scan completes. This boot seemed normal with the unexplained PCI recognitions … no other startup problems … home page still missing video ad … ran spybot and ZA … both clean reports … only navigated to mail and this site, so far. Will follow the F-Secure instructions and send reports directly. thank you Mouse
Ok, that didn't take long at all, actually … i think Zone Alarm's dual scan takes longer. Typical though, nothing found. However, initially, the scan wouldn't run … gave me a notice about: Insufficient rights to use ActiveX controls! Please check your user rights and IE security settings … once i clicked the OK, the system proceeded to complete the scan but was interrupted with a notice: An error has occured. Please close the scanner and your browser, then try again (Id:24) … so, i opened IE security and clicked restore defaults, then tried again … scan loaded and ran successfully. Should i re-boot the system at this point or no ?? Well we've run two anti-virus programs and found nothing.

Lets give this a try.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
hey you, tried that one but got a notice this version is expired … do you have a link to one a little more current ?? Notice block identified today's date and also indicated that the version exp 1/31/08 … i'll await your response instead of going to the site so i don't download the wrong item. Blessings to you for all your help and cooperation … BTW, the (combofix) icon for the program just disappeared without any prompt or direction when the OK button clicked on version notice … am guessing that is normal ? Mouse
Thanks, that one worked … follows is the report … looks like it may have found an issue or two … once i re-connected to internet, home page appeared much more like normal … full screen, video ad present (advertising games, of course) … didn't check any links, went straight to this post. Please advise :)
