Hello. I need some help, please. First, I will tell you that I followed your instructions for things to do before posting a hijack this log. I did the ATF cleaner, followed by spybot, followed by AVG/Ewido in safe mode, but was not able to change from quarantine, and so it deleted. I saved the log from 1st hijack this run before doing all the above. I saved ewido, but I am not sure if I did it in the correct order. I have everything written down that I thought was suspicious in Spybot, and all the things I deleted from spybot's start-up menu list, which I will list at the end. First I will upload all reports:This is the first hijack this log before I did any of your recommended actions. I just discovered while trying to post that I needed the older version of hijack this, so the first run before any of your recommended will be deleted.

Finally, here are the problems I have been having:

I am unable to do a system restore.

Zone Alarm got all messed up, the anti virus disappeared (I use ZAIS), I had to re-download it and re-install and now everytime I restart the computer I go through the found new network with ZAIS.

While Windows is starting, between the page that tells you it's starting, and the blue page with the Windows logo, a black screen appears with a white square box, nothing but 2 little squares are in the active window portion, inthe upper left corner, then 1 X in the close box on the right. Below the active window bar are 3 small rectangular marks, all close together, with the rest of the box empty. At the bottom centered is one click bar with OK in it, and if I don't click "OK", the computer will not continue booting up. I am scared everytime I click "OK". I hope this makes sense.

While running spybot, I went to the startup screen and here's what I found:

C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Professional\Ad-Aware.exe+c - Added by RBOT-ADJ WORM, located in the WINNT\System 32 or WINDOWS\system 32 directory.

C:\Program Files\Quick Time\qttask.exe-aboottime - Cool web search-traffic advance

C:\Program Files\JAVA\jre1.6.0_02\bin\jushed.exe - Added by SDBOT-AVX WORM, SDBOT-WI WORM

C:\Windows\system 32\ctfmon.exe - notes were parasite variant cool web search, added by RAIDY'S TROJAN, SPYHOAX-A TROJAN, other names VXH8JKDQ2.exe, NS6281400.50, down3.exe, sefe.exe, winstall.exe, tool2.exe, CVXH8KDQ2.exe.

Also a start up value for msmssgs.exe (MSMSGS) that said added by SMALL-EW TROJAN.

I never use instant messenger of any type, ever. All of the above I highlighted and removed from the list in spybot. The other issue I had was yesterday when I updated Ad-Aware pro, I accidentally clicked on the ad-watch button, which has given me problems before so I don't use it. Anyway, a box came up asking me to accept or block a change, I selected block because I panicked, and lost all my exe extensions, everything turned to lnk, which could not be opened either. I went to Doug Knox's Microsoft MVP page and followed his instructions to recover my exe and lnk by using task manager to enter the registry, and change the one value to the one he said to type in verbatim, and presto-all my exe's and lnk's worked again. What I typed in for the value was I believe "\"%1\" %*", and the exe & lnk returned. I will be extremely grateful for anyhelp, since I am worried about even using my computer right now. Thank you very much for your time.

Kind regards,
Cindy
Hello and Welcome to the forum.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
I did everything as you said. ATF cleaner, disconnected LAN cable, ran Combo Fix (should have turned off ZAIS because it asked for a million approvals, I gave all). I don't know where the log is for the Combo Fix scan, I left my computer for a second to plug the cable back in and the MSDOS window was gone. Previously it had said do not run any programs until the log is finished, so I left it alone. I did run another hijack this and will post it here. The "window" that kept popping up before during boot-up is gone-Hooray! Thank you for everything so far and I will stay right here. Also, just day before yesterday we added a cordless mouse and keyboard, and I noticed a lot of logitech entries. I would have no problem going back to wired input devices if necessary. Thank you so much. Cindy

I know you are all busy, it's all most 2 am for me, so I will check back tomorrow (actually today), to see if you have had time to look at the logs, and thank you so much for your help. Cindy
Download & run this file
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/s…Disinfector.exe

Be sure to insert any flash drives or USB devices that you use.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

bwUnin-7.2.0.137-8876480SL.exe

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

Hi. I'm a little confused, the jotti site is very busy, but the file you said to upload and submit, bwUnin-7.2.0.137-8876480SL.exe, is that one that I search for and find on my machine? The white box I spoke of before is back during the boot-up period. I downloaded Kaspersky, but I am having trouble updating the files for it, I keep getting an error about not having proper permission? Anyway, when you can, please let me know about the above mentioned file and where I find it. Thank you again, I really appreciate everything you are doing to help me. Cindy
I found the file, had it scanned, tried to post, but this site said I has posted all the images I was allowed to. I will try again. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service. Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita. Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware. Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 10Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample. Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all. Sponsored by HotelScraper.com. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello LDT,

I did everything you requested. The white box during boot-up is gone again, Hooray! Here is the latest hijack this log. At present, my computer appears to be acting normally, although since I just re-booted and immediately ran a hijack this log, I have not tried anything else. Also, I am using Firefox, not IE, but it keeps saying IE 7 in the log. Here it is:

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Dear LDTate, Thank you so much! When I went into folder options, the things hidden, etc, were all ready back to your suggestions, I don't know how this happened, I did not do it. I always update my anti-virus, daily in fact, and I think I mentioned before that I use Zone Alarm Internet Security-the paid version. I also have Spybot and Ad-Aware Pro, do you recommend that I get rid of these and just use SpywareBlaster? Because I can certainly do this. I have Windows updates set to download automatically, and I check the site weekly as well. I will add IE-Spyad tonight as well. And I will certainly read "How did I get infected in the first place", although I have an idea that my husband did it by frequenting you tube to look at porn. He is never allowed to touch my computer again. I am hoping that some of the programs you recommended have passwords so that he cannot change any settings. It's bad enough I have to use "Parental Controls" in ZAIS with a password so he can't get to some stuff. But he found a way around some of my safeguards, so I had to block them in the Program part. I cannot thank you enough, but will continue to make small donations whenever I can, and I have applied for the "Classroom", so that maybe I can help others. God Bless You, you have saved what was left of my sanity! Gratefully, Cindy
