Some process is launching multiple IE windows, even though I always use Firefox and seldom use IE unless I have to.

Here is my HiJackThis log and log from the uninstall manager. Thanks in advance for helping me.

hi,

lets start with vundofix first:

download and run vundofix.exe:

http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.

* Click the Scan for Vundo button.

* Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.

* You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES

* Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.

* When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.

* Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.

In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Thanks for volunteering to help me!

I downloaded VundoFix and ran it according to your directions. It DID find some suspect files and I clicked on the Remove Vundo button to remove them. I am posting new HijackThis logs and the vundofix.txt log below.

The problem still exists, by the way. I'm posting this using Firefox, and have had two IE windows pop up while I have been in this Firefox session.

Many thanks again. I'm looking forward to your next set of instructions.

- Earl

hi,

thanks for the info. another download to get and use:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

before using combofix:
disconnect your computer from the internet
Close any open windows
Close/disable anti virus and any antimalware programs that might be running. Usually this can be done by clicking on the icons by the clock and selecting exit etc. This is done to prevent any possible interference while Combofix is running. After combofix is done you can restart them.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
re-enable any programs you disabled
reconnect computer to the internet
Post the combofix log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

shelf life
Thanks for your help. I tried to download ComboFix from the links you listed, but it would not download on this computer. (A Pop-up asked me if I wanted to save the file, but when I clicked on "Save File" it never gave me the second window to tell it where to save.) I got around this by downloading to a USB thumb drive on my laptop, then moved the thumb drive over to this computer and copied ComboFix to the desktop.

ComboFix ran to completion, and the log is posted below. It looks like ComboFix removed all or part of many applications I had installed, like Norton 360, TiVo Desktop and eFax. Is this normal behavior?

The IE windows continue to pop-up. I had two of them pop-up while I was navigating to this site to post this reply.

Next suggestions??

Thanks.. Earl

shelf life
hi!

I thought the problem was gone.. no IE popups the first time I rebooted after running ComboFix this time, but now they are back!

A couple of questions…. how will you know that my malware has been removed and the issues resolved? Are we done now?

What about the software that ComboFix removed last time. Should I just reinstall the software that I need?

Your assistance is very, VERY appreciated. Thank you.

Here are the logs:

hi,

if you are still getting popups then we are not done. in fact we will get another download to run based on some things combofix found. glad to help. malware is getting more and more invasive and sometimes can be difficult to remove

the download:
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/RemovalTools/SDFix.exe

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%

(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer

* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;

* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.

* Choose your usual account.

* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.

* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.

* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt

(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Thanks again for your help.

Here are the logs, posted below. I haven't seen any IE pop-ups yet, but it is probably too soon to tell.

hi, ok good. your welcome. one more thing to do start HJT, click "Do a system scan only" put a checkmark beside the items below, close all windows and click "fix checked". O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file) O20 - Winlogon Notify: AutorunsDisabled - C:\WINDOWS\ you can uninstall combofix like this: start>run and type in combofix /u click ok note: there is a space after the "x" and before the / if all is good, time to make new restore points. the why and how: One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed. only do this once, not on a regular basis. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (winXP) 1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot happy safe surfing out there
Thank you. I've followed all of your instructions and the computer works fine now. This is a great service you offer, and I appreciate you volunteering your time and knowledge. - Earl
