So my AVG started catching some Dropper.Agent.GIT files and I ran SUPERAntiSpyware to try to get rid of it, but I have come to discover this virus is a little more difficult than ones I've faced in the past. I've checked online for ways to get rid of this virus, and all I can find are people posting their HijackThis logs and getting personalized responses on how to fix their problem. I couldn't find anywhere how to decipher my own HijackThis log, so I'll do the same thing that everyone else is doing. So here is my HijackThis log: (oh and thanks for the help!)

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hello Zero722 and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please reply to this thread, do not start another.
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by one of the teachers. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

we are currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.
while you are waiting one other thing that can be of good use is an uninstall list so please do the following

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Gringo
Hello Zero722

: older version of hijackthis

You are using an older version of hijackthis please uninstall the old version by going to add/remove and then choose remove, then click here to download the new version of HJTsetup.exe

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • then please close the program
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

: Download and Run FixWarout

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

: Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

Gringo
Hi Gringo! Thanks for your help. I've done as you've asked and have a lot of reports to paste on here, haha. I noticed that when I booted up my computer that it had an error and could not find "C:/Windows/system32/pmkhg.exe" and also a reg file that was very similar. After I ran fixwareout and my computer rebooted, I had internet problems, so I executed dnsbak like it told me to and everything was fine. I set my network connections to obtain DNS servers automatically, however I had to make it also find my IP address automatically before it would allow me to find DNS servers automatically. When I tried to delete C:/Windows/system32/pmkhg.exe I could not find it as I expected considering that my computer had already told me that it couldn't find it, lol. Also, right before my computer rebooted by combo fix, it ran into an error. I got a blue screen of death saying that I had an INVALID_KERNEL_HANDLE or something like that. I had to hold my power button to get my computer to reboot, but combo fix ran normally regardless.

Here is the HijackThis log, the uninstall log, the fixwareout log, and the combofix log. Thank you again for your help!

Hello Zero722

you have done a good job so far so lets keep going

first I am going to need more info on the blue screen that you had
at what piont did it happen, try to remember axacly what it said and anything else you can think of
so I can let the develiper of combofix know so he can look into it

now on to the fixes

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Registry::
[hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks]
"{D7FD6C15-4927-4AAE-BF12-FBDABD287EB1}"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\cbxyywu]

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
[external image: Posted Image]
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

P2P Warning!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire PRO
BitTornado

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire,BitTornado, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint Media Player :

while researching your log I ran across this -spyhunter- you have some good programs on your computer so I would think about removing this one

:uninstall some programs:

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add remove programs
click on the following programs

2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Viewpoint Media Player<—recomended
LimeWire PRO 4.10.9<—recomended
BitTornado 0.3.17<—recomended
SpyHunter<—recomended

and click on remove

now reboot your computer

Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6u4.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

so that is enough for now let me have the log from combofix
and a new log from hijackthis

gringo
Ok. I don't remember much about the blue screen. It happened while combo fix was shutting down my computer. It happened at the point that I would normally expect the computer to shut off but instead it went into that blue screen. I actually didn't read it too much, I just remember it said something like I had an error: INVALID_KERNEL_HANDLE. The only way to get out of it was to hold the power button.

I deleted everything you told me to, except for bit torrent, haha. I didn't even know Limewire was on my computer, so I was relieved to get rid of it, haha. That and viewpoint. When I use bit torrent I usually try to be pretty responsible about it and make sure if I download anything that it has good comments and such. Never download .zip or .rar files. I also updated Java.

I ran the combo fix script and have the log files for it and HijackThis here.

Once again thank you for your help!

this is very important it could save you later

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
