[Resolved] Privacy in Danger with the Red Background

I've managed to get that annoying little bug that turns your background into the large red biohazard sign saying my privacy is in danger and randomly gives annoying security pop-ups and changes windows for you. I ran a google search for a solution and found this site. I've downloaded the Combofix and Smitfraudfixes and tried to download the AVG antivirus, but it gave me an error message just before I could run its installation. I've tried the whole safe mode , Smitfraud option 2, safe mode, Smitfraud option 3, restart and run the combofix, as was recommended in other topics, but the stupid thing keeps coming back. I've manged to keep it at bay by deleting the explorer process and restarting it through the task manager, which stops it for a while, but it keeps coming back. Can you guys help me?

Much appreciated,

Deer717

Hello Deer717 and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. Delete SmitfraudFix.exe from your system, if still present.

B. UNINSTALL your current copy of ComboFix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

  • [external image: Posted Image]

C. Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt

D. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

C. Reports/Logs to post
  • SDFix Report
  • ComboFix.txt
  • New HiackThis log obtained after all the tools have finished their work.
Firstly, when I tried to uninstall the first combofix through the run menu, it wouldn't let me. No combination of spaces or capital letters changes anything. I went through the SDfix and saved the log, and then afterwards (I ran a search on my C: drive for all instances of files with Combofix in the name and recycled them) I downloaded the Combofix from each of the links you sent and tried each of them (not at the same time, one after the other) and both of them displayed a loading bar followed by a blue background command prompt with a period in the title bar which did nothing for 2 hours but flash an underscore. Am I doing something wrong?

Here's the output from the SDfix, which is the only script I have thus far.

Finished!
Please try copy/pasting theverything in bold that follows: Combofix /u Note the space between the "x" and the "/" is crucial. Tell me if that works.
I get a bar that has "Combofix" as the title which says "Windows cannot find "Combofix'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
Well, I figured out how to uninstall it. I basically clicked on browse and then selected Combofix on my desktop, which gave me the entire file directory location for combofix and placed /u at the end. I'll let you know what happens when I try to redownload combofix now.
Well, now I've tried both combofixes and their associated uninstallations after each of them proceeded to do the same things they had initially done. That is, nothing. Maybe it's something to do with combofix? McAfee is getting mad at me, I've turned so many things off, including the firewall, email and aim protection, all scans, and internet site protections, so I don't think that is to do with it. I'm not clicking the window. Perhaps I'm just unloved?
It sounds as iff there may be a bug in the latest release of ComboFix. The tool is often updated daily. We will wait a few hours and see. In the meantime, let us try to get rid of as much as we can on our own. SDFix was a good start.

A. Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
  • Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.

B. Reboot into Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode*Restart the computer.
*as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
*Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
*press Enter.

C. Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe to start the tool again
  • Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
  • Click Close to exit the program.
Alright, the bugger ran in over 2 1/2 hours, but it's finally done.

R0 Thpdrv (TOSHIBA HDD Protection Driver) - c:\windows\system32\drivers\thpdrv.sys
A. A file association requires repair:

To repair the faulty file associations, please do the following:
  • Make sure that DSS.exe is located on your Desktop.
  • Click on your START button, then choose Run. A little box will appear.
  • Now copy and paste all the following in bold (including the "" marks into the run box and click OK.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

  • This will start DSS in a different way. A small window will appear.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a tick in the boxes in question.
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt.

Post the contents of that logfile with your next post
.

B. Your McAfee firewall is not working.

C. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [updateMgr] C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\AdobeUpdateManager.exe AcRdB7_0_0

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.
Yeah, I know that the firewall is turned off. I did so to ensure it didn't interfere with any of the scans, as you suggested it could do so with the Combofix. I can turn it back on now if you think it's best, otherwise I was just planning on leaving it off until everything is cleared up.

Firstly, daft.exe.
