My sister download and installed an infected torrent on my desktop :( . I have download and run Kaspersky AV7 and it has detected and neutralized 396 threats. When I rebooted I still get threats found in my start up scan usually in C:\\WINDOWS\System32\DDCYA.exe. The malware I saw listed on the Kasperky log are:

Trojan-dropper.win32.agent.dgo
Trojan-downloader.win32.purityscan.fe
Trojan-dowloader.win32.small.hml
Trojan program backdoor.win32.agent.dbm
Virus.win32.trats.d
and win32 adware

Most of them being found in
C:\\WINDOWS\system32\ ……exe
C:\\Documents and Settings\Sage\Local Settings\Temp\RCX … .tmp
C:\\System Volume Information\_restore{2C739B56-B7F6-485C-B24F-24794B964165}\RP514\A0045414.

I am running Windows XP on an AMD Sempron Processor, 2800+, 1.60 GHz, 1.43 GB of RAM

I've never had an infection before so I'm not sure really what to do and am hoping that someone here can help as there are files and programs on it that I cannot easily replace and really don't want to have to reformat my hardrive. Luckily my laptop is not infected and I can use that.

Hi! Welcome to the WTT forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please dont use a code box for your logs. Just copy and paste straight in to the Reply box.

Please remove the version of HijackThis you have on your pc and follow the instructions below.

Install HijackThis

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Close this window.

Rename HijackThis
There is a possibility an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to iseeu.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.
Okay I renamed it to iseeu.exe and then made a new log and I made an uninstall log. I hope this helps.

Hi

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by a Backdoor Trojan.
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present…
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords – for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.
There are some programs on there that I do not have backups for. I have used that computer for online banking and some online shopping. As soon as I realized that there was a virus on that computer. I unplugged it from the internet and my network. As I didn't want to pass anything on. Most of my important files are stored on an External Hard drive that is linked to that computer I haven't had a chance to go through the files on that one as of yet. So your saying that the best option would be to reformat the hardrive completely on that computer. I guess I would rather be safe then sorry. Is there anyway to save the one or two programs that I do not have a backup through. I bought them online and I don't have a CD for them. Or the emails that are stored in outlook on that computer. Most of the rest off the rest of the stuff on there I can replace with time. I have no idea how to go about reformatting a hardrive. But that seems like it would be the best option. As I have used that computer for online banking and online shopping I will be calling my bank to report it. But I have recently checked my account and there are so far no problems.
Whoops I forgot to mention that I mainly use that computer for my Web design related classes as the monitor is better. I also use it for some browsing and the such and if I want to sit at my desk and use a real keyboard instead of my laptop. I would rather not have to reformat the hard drive but if that is what would be best I am willing to do that. I could always just keep it offlline although that would be a bit of a bother. So to help me make this decision on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most important how would you rate my need to reformat?
Hi The warning I issued is a standard we malware fighters use in these situations. The particular backdoor trojan isnt too difficult to remove, but we would be failing you if we didnt tell you the full story. It is best you check your bank accounts and so on, and change passwords. So if you wish to proceed with a clean up let me know.
I talked it over with my dad and I would like to work on clean the files and not re-formate the hard drive. I will just not use that computer for anything security sensitive. Can you please get me started on the next step for cleaning the infected files.
Hi

Ok follow the instructions in the order I have set them out, please.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back in your next reply.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please download Combofix from Bleeping Computer.

If you can't download it from there, please try these 2 alternative sites:

Forospyware
Geeks to Go

  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your anti-virus and any real-time anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Click Start>Run copy/paste or type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall into the Run box and click OK.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2:Remember to re-enable your anti-virus and anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task-Manager use the Processes tab (press ctrl alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply post:
Report.txt
Vundofix.txt
ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run
Hi It's now gone on to phase 2 and has found 3 things so far. So should I still go on to combo fix? I have the report for the SDFix.
Okay here are the log/reports for the SDFIix, ComboFix, and a new HiJackThis log. The system started to run a lot faster basically back to normal after running the Combofix.

Hi

Just need to ask, but is your computer accessed remotely for any reason?

We now suggest that you install the Windows Recovery Console. The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[external image: Posted Image]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.
