When I go to User Accounts in XP Home mshta.exe always starts. It promptly stops when I close the User Accounts. I have run Spybot S&D it found nothing. I used ATF-Cleaner and then ran AVG AntiSpy in safe mode. Nothing is found. Zone Alarm Anti-spy is also finding nothing. ZoneAlarm has shown Global Windows Hook warnings associated with this file. I am concerned that passwords are in jeopardy.
Hello and welcome to the forum. Please don't start anymore new topics. If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
My ZoneAlarm Security Suite 7.0.462.000 indicates many Global Hooks Warnings. At first they were associcated with mshta.exe. Now I get them with msmsgs.exe. The initial even is shown in my ZA logs.

This strange stuff seemed to coincide with trying to do an online scan with Trendmicro. After many failed attempts I lessened my firewall settings thinking that was the issue. I have a feeling that this event did something to my PC.
After this one of the steps that you guys recommend is to scan with Spybot S&D. It discovered that my hosts file contained redirections from Kaspersky, Trendmicro, Symantec and many others.

My research of the Hosts file change lead me to find that this is one of the side effects of a virus called (Renos.?) which I had last fall that also delivered a Smitfraud rootkit. The rootkit and virus were removed successfully - except as I just found out, the hosts file was still corrupt.

Reboot and please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I found the product Hosts from mvps.org and have been using that for my hosts file. The hosts file was already fixed - I did not make that clear before. I am mostly concerned about all of these Global Hooks warnings that I have had and whether or not I have something that has not been detected. The very first warning was while I thought I was connecting to Trendmicro to do a antivurs scan but the AV never ran, but something did run that caused a Global Windows Hook with mshta.exe as the culprit. Right at this moment computer appears to be ok. I was gone all day and when I got home I saw that there were 2 or 3 Global Windows Hook warning for msmsgs.exe.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
        1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
I had already moved Combofix to trash and emptied. I was worried about kids running it. This probably wasn't the smartest thing for me to do. Any advice.

No problem as long as it's gone
You guys are awesome. Thanks for your help. I am probably a little bit paranoid after I got my first virus last fall. I have not performed any transactions/logins since my latest strange event occured on Jan 11 2008. I will have my first transaction be a donation to you guys! Thanks again.
