My HJT log is below. I ran the AVG spyware scan (in safe mode) and it came up with nothing. Spybot also finds nothing - but the system goes slooooow - gets progressively worse from reboot on - to the point it is at a standstill - and the hard drive activity is constant - as if a scan is in progress. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated.

Hello DEmach,

Welcome to the forum, sorry for the delay. I am not looking at anything bad on your log, not to say something could be hidden and not showing up, lets do a couple of things.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.
Thanks so much for helping - this thing is really slow. Right now, with only the browser open, the drive access light is going constantly (as if a scan was in progress) and it is extremely slow. Could it be a hardware issue? Up till a week or so ago it was working fine…

New HJT log follows - the other on-line scan log is attached.

Hi,

Kaspersky is excellent for finding infections on your system , and it found nothing and your HJT log is clean. what I would suggest doing is to run this program to check for a Rootkit infection, if it comes up clean than your problems may be software or hardware related. Have you installed any new programs or hardware prior to this issue ??? If Blacklight comes back clean then I can direct you to some windows support forums that deal with these sort of issues.

Download and Save the Trial of Blacklight to your desktop.
  • Download the Blacklight Beta graphical user interface version
  • Double-click blbeta.exe
  • Then accept the agreement
  • Click > scan then > next
  • You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
  • Copy and paste this log in your next reply.
  • Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"
I ran the scan it it came up with nothing…the log is below. I have not installed anything recently, other than spybot, and that was to try to find the issue that was causing the problem… Maybe it is a hardware or op system issue - really strange as it works fine for a while after a re-boot, but then gets progressively worse…never seen aything like it… Any suggestions for a dignostic program or another forum? I really appreciate all your help! 01/19/08 10:58:44 [Info]: BlackLight Engine 1.0.67 initialized 01/19/08 10:58:44 [Info]: OS: 5.1 build 2600 (Service Pack 2) 01/19/08 10:58:44 [Note]: 7019 4 01/19/08 10:58:44 [Note]: 7005 0 01/19/08 10:58:49 [Note]: 7006 0 01/19/08 10:58:49 [Note]: 7011 1308 01/19/08 10:58:49 [Note]: 7026 0 01/19/08 10:58:49 [Note]: 7026 0 01/19/08 10:58:58 [Note]: FSRAW library version 1.7.1024 01/19/08 11:05:50 [Note]: 2000 1012 01/19/08 11:06:45 [Note]: 7007 0
You can try one of these. We just do malware removal in this forum so this is as far as I can go.

I think I have it fixed. From the task list the only process with any activity was mcmscsvc.exe I did a google search for this and found the following post

http://help.wugnet.com/windows/McAfee-Exce…pict569456.html

It appears it was a problem with a (probably automatic) update of McAffee (from comcast) - nice…

Followed their fix and it seems to have worked. I guess I should have started here, but the way it was acting I just assumed it was a virus or similar…

Thanks again for all your help!
