I clicked on a movie in myspace and got hammered with pop ups. I ran AVG and the pop ups stopped. TodayI keep getting pop ups advertising a virus scan program (which i did not download the program) and they kept comming and comming, so I downloaded Avast virus scanner and it scanned the boot sectors after I rebooted. It found several files that were infected with various trojans. But then it got to the c:\windows32 folder and said I had 3 files infected including pmnlm.dll. Please help!! I'm a little computer literate lol but from what I read, not literate enough to handle this by myself. So I downloaded HijackThis and here are my logs.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\561854573350299cf5c23eea1e0cff28\update\update.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix.exe" /KillAll

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File and include it in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* ComboFix will automatically RESTART your machine when the KillAll switch is used.

* Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run.
If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

You have a file infector on board. This can be handled and may take a post or 2 as it's farly new.
DO NOT add any new programs to this machine untill we are all clean. They may become infected.

If the buttons on your keyboard are not acting right don't try to fix them yet. The file infector has gotten to them I think.

I see from your HJT log AVAST isn't running right now. WHY ?
Or did you do this scan in safe mode for some reason?

NOTE: This script was done for this user specifically.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE IT IF YOU ARE NOT THIS USER
YOU WILL HURT THE WORKINGS OF YOUR COMPUTER !!
.

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:ComboFix.txt which I will need in your next reply.

Using Internet explorer (firefox will not work)
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click accept on the first page.

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from ComboFix
  • The report from Kaspersky
To my knowledge I didn't do anything to alter Avast. I'm not sure why it's not running on start up. Here are the logs you requested.

Scan process completed.
I'm checking on something now.
For now if your using the computer I want you to manually start your anti virus program.
Click start/all programs and turn on awil software/avast.

Did you do anything to turn off certain services ?
I went to http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/xpprofiles.htm to free up some ram for an MMORPG that I play, that's the only way I've gone through to disable certain systems. I started up Avast and enabled the resident scanner to the highest, but when I click off of that and onto another part of the control panel the resident scanner gets disabled again. I've gone through and updated the virus database also. It said it completed the update with errors :

Program cannot use Chest client: (null)
—>Description: Virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed.
Looks like to free up memory you disabled your anti virus program permenetly .
The way you have done it stops your anti virus from running at all.

Bad idea. ;)
If your going to game and you want to do this I wouldn't do it this way.
To disable it during a game right click on the avast icon and choose disable. This way when your done and you restart you have an anti virus program running.
If your going to game and you want to do this I wouldn't do it this way.

+++++++++++++++++++++++
Try this for me..
Click /start./run type in msconfig.
go to the services tab.
Make sure there is a check by these 4 services

avast! Web Scanner"
"avast! Mail Scanner
"avast! Antivirus
"aswUpdSv

Click Apply and OK.

Restart your computer and then do a new HJT log and send it to me.

Also let me know how things seem to be running now.
I did what you said, but I don't have the "aswUpdSv" open in MSConfig. I did however have "avast avs4 control service" which I enabled. I still don't have an icon in the start bar for the virus protection. I've noticed there are no pop ups hitting anymore, but the computer seems slow to start up, but not near as bad as before. I've noticed that he light indicator on the hard drive seems to come on and off just about ever second no matter what I'm doing. It pretty much just consitantly flashes (not really sure if that's normal or not)

Here are the logs

Every thing really looks pretty good now. Avast is starting up .
That's important.

Did you have McAfee anti virus installed at some point? Did you uninstall it ?

I'll ask for one more scan to see if I see anything running out of the ordinary.
You have to understand that "running slow" is such a relative term .

I will clear you of Malware/spyware. Of that you can be sure.
Then I have a few things you can try to help with speed issues. But it's not my fort'e.

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

Go to start > run and copy and paste this in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files.

I see no evidence of a fire wall. I suggest you get one in place now.

A few words on Microsofts firewall. It only works in one direction. Incoming.
That means if something gets by it you would never know it was trying
to contact the internet.
Example: A bad program installs itself. You would never know it was contacting the internet.
Downloading other nasties and so forth.

If you decide to run one of these you should be certain Microsofts firewall is disabled.
To disable it.

I will list a few free firewalls for you. These are good (free) firewalls:

Never run 2 firwalls together. They will interfere with each other.
So just download and install one!

Comodo Fairly simple to use

Sunbelt Personal Firewall

A few things to help with possible threats

These are optional . But will help protect you further.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

I put combofix /u in the run command and it said that windows couldn't find it to delete it and asked me to search for it. So since you said to do the things in order (I hope this is ok) I will wait to do all of your recommendations untill I hear from you again in regards to combofix. I'm sure I can figure out how to uninstall it, but I've not been doing a very good job with my computer lately, so i'll wait lol Thank you so much for your help with all this mess. I'm certainly glad there are people like you guys out there who are willing to take the time and effort to help people like me. You certainly saved me from reformatting my computer to get rid of the problem!
