I have started to get the pop up box wtoolsa - this program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down, this it doesn't do. It does not pop up whilst I am on the net. Any suggestions how I can get rid of this as it very frustrating when working off-line. I am on AOL and have Windows 98. This file is in C:/programs/common files/wintools/wtoolsa (with an Internet icon next to it). I have a firewall and virus checker which are all uptodate. I have done a scandisk and no errors and haven't been able to do a defrag as the program error keeps stopping it. I have tried to defrag during safe mode, but my mouse is de-activated during Safe Mode. Wiseowl
Welcome to TomCoyote Forums.

What I need you do is download a program called HijackThis and run it, it will allow the experts here to see what is wrong with your PC and assist you in solving your problem.

Ok.

Create a folder (suggest C:\HJT ) for Hijack This!, this is important as it creates backup files within its own folder.

Click on this link and download the program into that folder.

You can then run HijackThis by double-left-clicking HijackThis.exe file in that folder, then click "scan" button once the program is running.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "FIX" ANYTHING YET!

Then click "Save log". After the log is saved, it will appear in a Notepad editor window.

In the Notepad editor window, simply: RIGHT CLICK> Select all > RIGHT CLICK > copy

Reply to this thread.

In the "Enter your post area" : RIGHT CLICK > paste

That will paste an exact copy of the log.

Ok, thanks for posting the complete log.

First - Create a folder (suggest C:\HJT ) for HijackThis, this is important as it creates backup files within its own folder and copy Hijackthis.exe to that folder. Its important, trust me.

Next, go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, scroll down the list till you see an entry like NewDotNet Domains - click it and press the add/remove button. Once done please restart your PC.

Go to here and download a copy of Ad-aware (free version), then install it. Run it from your start menu. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest
reference file. Then click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically
quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes",
"Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites"
and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister
objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate
in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished,
the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files
will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will
put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at
the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?". Then exit program and restart PC once more.

Go to here and download a copy of Spybot 1.3 (its free), install (take default options) and run it. Check for on-line updates and update if any found. Click the "search & destroy" icon on the left, then click "check for problems", it will take a few minutes to scan PC. Once done it will present you with a list, ensure that all items in red are ticked, then clicked "fix selected problems". Once done, exit Spybot and restart PC.

Now go to here and use it to do an on-line virus scan. Tick the Auto Clean box before scanning.

Once complete restart PC once more. Run Hijackthis (from its own folder) and post the revised log.
Thanks Vultura for getting back to me. I have done what you have asked (hopefully!!), it wasn't I didn't trust you, but I saved in wrong folder, hopefully I have resolved this now. A couple of points to note, I still have the error message. I was unable to remove NewDotNet Domains - this was not on the list or nothing like it, the nearest was Network Play System (Patching). I downloaded the freenet.de Spybot 1.3 software (is this better than the AOL spyware software?), and I did my own virus check using the Norton Virus checker which is always running on my machine and is uptodate (I didn't want to download another software when I already had adequate virus software), it scanned over 61,000 files and none were found to be infected. How do I get rid of my irratating problem? Is it doing any harm to my computer?

Ok, the log is looking better, although we still have work to do. Next step is to remove Wintools, its not something you want on your PC. After its gone, so should your error message. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, scroll down the list till you see an entry like Wintools- click it and press the add/remove button. Once done please restart your PC. If it won't uninstall we will have to remove it with HijackThis. Can you run HijackThis and repost a new log if it does uninstall. With regard to the on-line anti-virus scan I suggested, it does not require you to download and install software, instead it uses a small activex applet to scan with. Not that I don't trust your Norton install, its just an extra precaution. Is you mouse USB? If so, thats why it does not work in safe mode. Safe mode stops drivers, etc from loading, so all you get is a Windows running in basic form for diagnostic purposes.
Sorry for the delay to responding to your last post, I have done the deed and the error message has stopped. However, I still have wintools on my c drive: C:\windows\program files\common files\wintools, the root wtoolsa has disappeared. There was a program loaded wintools-internet explore V.2 (this is what I removed from the Control Panel). Is there still the need to remove Wintools, I assume it was loaded with the original software? If so why? In addition, for my "learning" why did you get me to do the log first before removing? Is there anything else showing on the log that needs addressing? I enclose the latest log following this deletion.

Hi Wiseowl! vultura asked me to get back to you since he is out of town.

About the need for new logs we have a habit of asking for fresh logs to be sure that all problems is removed and also for us helpers to check that we didn’t miss anything

Let’s remove the leftovers of Wintools and some other things in your log.

Please do all the steps in the order they are listed
  • Important: Create a folder to place HJT in (suggestion C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe).
When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary. At the moment you have it in C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\HJT\HIJACKTHIS.EXE, that's ok but could be a bit confusing if you want to run it again and another helper might react on why it is in that folder

  • Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browsers and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

  • Optional
The following activeX controls will reinstall when (and if) you revisit that website, UNLESS you know they are from a safe source, check to remove.

  • Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded

  • Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

  • Find and delete the following:

    Folders
    C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools

  • Reboot back into normal mode

  • Rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check. Also please describe how your computer behaves.
Hello, thanks for your e-mail, unfortunately I am unable to make any progress at the moment as I have a further problem, my son inadvertently loaded the free Shrek CD (AOL 9) which aborted due to an error, we now can only work in safe mode, do you know how to get us out of this mess, the CD did not install then I can respond to your posting
Here's my latest log, I will re-poisition my hijackthis file tomorrow

Hi forget the last message, I have resolved my desktop issue, that's all it was thank goodness, hopefully. Anyway I have done what you asked, I have re-housed the Hijackthis file. I have fix checked the various file references you advised about including the optional ones. One problem I do have is that as I have a usb mouse, I cannot move around in Safe Mode effectively. So I have don a diskcleanup getting rid of all temporary files as requested. I have also deleted the Wintools file (but it is currently in my Recycle Bin as I had to do this in normal mode), I couldn't access the view menu of My Computer without a mouse
Here's my latest log, and my computer seems to behaving itself, fingers crossed. Thanks once again for your help with this, I am certainly learning.

The reason for me telling you to do things in safe mode is because most of the time you cant do the things like deleting folders and files in normal mode but it doesn’t really matter in what mode to remove the files as long as you are able to do it.

The log looks clean now as far as I can tell.

How are your browser and computer behaving?

I would suggest that you go to windows update and download and install all critical updates.

You also might want to delete your Temporary Internet Files and do a full virus scan at one or more of the free virus checkers that are in that link.

To reduce the risks of getting this type of problem again look at the links in my signature. At least read this one >> How Did I Get Infected In The First Place?
Thanks Lappen for getting back to me, my browser and computer seem to be behaving. I read your post with interest, especially the article How did I get infected in the first place and I have taken on board some of the advice. I have downloaded SpywareBlaster, but not SpywareGuard - not sure if it will cause problems with my current software (it does warn you). I have done Jason Levine's Browser Security Tests, that was really interesting. A couple of questions: is it worth downloading registry mechanic - i did this by accident when downloading SpywareBlaster but now have uninstalled, when I ran it, it identified 147 problems -I didn't investigate further, as I reaslised it was the wrong program can I safely disable JavaScript? I have set up a number of protections using the Browser Security Tests, but can't do all Thank you once again for all your help - I am cetainly getting bettr at this troubleshooting. Wiseowl :D

I don’t have any experience with that program so I can’t help you there

It’s safe to disable JavaScript; you can always re enable it if you want :)
Before I disable Javascript, what effect will it have on me, what will it prevent me from doing? How do I disable? Thanks once again :D
