1.) Copy the following text to a new notepad file.
Save it as CFScript.txt but do NOT use it yet.

  • Copy the entire contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as CFScript.txt (Overwrite the existing one)
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

File::
C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper .exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon .exe

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\byxyywt]

2.) Drag log.txt from desktop that RenV created on top of RenV.exe
Follow the prompts.
Once done it makes a log.
Post its results with your next reply

3.) Drag CFScript on top of combofix.exe and let it run.
Post the new log it makes when machine reboots.

Let me know how machine is running.
I tried three times to run the RenV prog as you wanted, but it did nothing. I enclosed a copy of my screen showing the message I was given. What should I do now?
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Here are the two files you requested.

Only a couple leftovers, but we're not finished yet.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Sys

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\byxyywt]

Save this as Save this as "CFScript"

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: byxyywt - byxyywt.dll (file missing)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.
I do not have this as a choice on Hijackthis: O20 - Winlogon Notify: byxyywt - byxyywt.dll (file missing)

Here is the log file anyway.

Chad

Do you see all the ones with these at the end [ ]?
Those will need to be re-installed.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
Some I need to locate all the software that is associated those files and uninstall and then reinstall the files software? If this is true I might need some time to locate the software. And once I do that you want me to send you a new HiJackThis file? Chad

And once I do that you want me to send you a new HiJackThis file?

Chad

Those might need re-installing. Test them out first.

I was just wondering, would it be bad to tell HiJackThis to fix checked boxes showing the bad files?

Post a new HijackThis log.
Not all files that show missing in a HijackThis log are missing.
Here is my new HiJackThis Logfile you requested. I am unsure if you still wanted to reistall specific files prior to sending this, please let me know.

Also, I recently purchased Norton AntiVirus 2008 with Antispyware. I have not installed or even opened this product yet, I would like to work with you and follow your advice. I just wanted to let you know I now own a new copy of Norton. Just let me know when I should install it, since I have not been protected for about 1-2 months.

Thanks again for your help and advice, I already do notice faster start-ups and better program start-up response time.

I await your advice…

Chad

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    You can now install Norton's.
Run a full scan and let me know if it found anything bad.

I ran a full system scan and Norton '08 didn't find anything.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

[*]Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week

(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.

Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

Understanding and Using Firewalls

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.

This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

[*]Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer

settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

[*]IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

[*] Winpatrol

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.

Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
