Hi Mnudel,

So IE7 is still running very slowly as per your original post?

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following infected files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mitch and Sherrie\Shared\fathers and daughters 52.wma
N:\9-3-2007\C\Documents and Settings\Mitch and Sherrie\Shared\fathers and daughters 52.wma

Then download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As…, select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Next, download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Blacklight report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.
Do you still need help with your machine? If the instructions are unclear or something isn't working, please let me know before proceeding.

Hi Mnudel,

I can't see any signs of malware in there, but there is some tidying up to do:

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All… and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\My Web Search Bar]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\My Web Search Community Tools]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\MyWebSearch Email Plugin]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SoftwareStation]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\StopSignSsTsMon]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\webscan]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]
Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:[external image: Posted Image]
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.

We've had a pretty thorough look at your computer and at this stage it looks clean of malware, so I'd say the slowdown has other causes.
Some suggestions for pinning it down:
  • Uninstall unnecessary applications via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
  • Turn off unnecessary auto-starting applications. Look at your HijackThis log for programs which automatically start - many are listed in the O4 section of the log, and turn of the automatic starting functionality from within the program. Note: Please do not use HijackThis to remove the entries.
  • Use Process Explorer to monitor resources on your system. Run Process Explorer minimized and when a slowdown occurs, switch to the Process Explorer window to see which process is using a high percentage of CPU.
  • Post in the Microsoft Windows forum here at What the Tech to get more help.

You should now delete FindAWF.exe, fsbl.exe and dss.exe from your Desktop.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have a good antivirus suite installed, however I recommend you also install specialist antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this will protect you from a wider range of malware and also that it will protect you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/s…re/default.mspx

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
I have attached fix.zip to this post, please download it, then unzip fix.reg to your desktop.

Then, right-click fix.reg and choose Merge, say Yes to the prompt.

You should receive a message that the merge was successful - please let me know if this happens.

Attachments:

This did not work again. The fix.reg that you sent in the fix.zip file continues to not have a associated program. Right click does not show a merge option.
Hi, please try this:

Open My Computer, select Tools->Folder Options
Select the File Types tab
Scroll down the Registered File Types list and find the entry for REG
Highlight that entry and click Change…
If Registry Editor is listed, select it and press OK
If Registry Editor is not listed, press Browse…, browse to and select C:\Windows\regedit.exe then press OK
Close the Folder Options dialog box.

The file type association should be fixed now, but you can use this method to merge the file if you still have any difficulty:

Make sure fix.reg is on your Desktop.
Then press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

regedit "%userprofile%\desktop\fix.reg"

You should receive a prompt asking if you want to add the information in fix.reg to the registry - click Yes
You should then receive confirmation that the information was successfully added.

Please let me know how you got on.
sorry it took so long. Yes it did. and its good to know that my system is clean but any more ideas on how to determine why it takes so long for my IE 7 to open and go to a website. It didnt use to be that way. Thanks for all your help in this.
Mnudel,

I'm glad that worked :)

There are a lot of possible explanations for a slow browser so it can be a difficult thing to diagnose. The problem doesn't look to be malware so I recommend you try posting in the Browsers, Internet and email forum here at What the Tech - the Tech experts specialize in this type of issue and I'm sure they'll be able to help you.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
