can someone please explain to me exactly how to, after downloading the program, extract it into its own folder? thanks CJ
Create a folder (suggest C:\HJT ) for Hijack This!, this is important as it creates backup files within its own folder.

Click on this link and download the program into that folder.

You can then run HijackThis by double-left-clicking HijackThis.exe file in that folder, then click "scan" button once the program is running.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO "FIX" ANYTHING YET!

Then click "Save log". After the log is saved, it will appear in a Notepad editor window.

In the Notepad editor window, simply: RIGHT CLICK> Select all > RIGHT CLICK > copy

Start a new thread in the forum for Hijack This! logs.

In the "Enter your post area" : RIGHT CLICK > paste

That will paste an exact copy of the log, at the top please include a description of the problem(s) you are encountering.
I had this same problem/question. I created new folder and downloaded to it. What was deposited there was a shortcut to HJT. When I doubleclicked it, I got the "What Program to Open" dialogue. I have tried moving the program from the desktop to the folder I created, but Explorer won't allow it. Can't figger this out……..
I hope this will help you.

Please download this self extracting file to your My Downloads folder or My Received Files (dependent on your Operating System):

http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Click the "Save" button.

Navigate to My Documents>Chose My Downloads or My Received Files folder once inside that folder click "Save".

Now go to the folder you saved HijackThis_sfx.exe in.

Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe and select Unzip. When done click "OK".
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis and double click HijackThis.exe. Hit "Do a system scan and save a logfile"

Click that, save the log, Ctrl-A to Select All, and paste Ctrl-V its contents in a [New Topic] in the 'HijackThis Logs and Problems (Open) Forum' if you need help with your log.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.
