[Resolved] Computer unstable

Hello,
I was recently posting in the general hardware forum :http://forums.whatthetech.com/Monitor_shut_down_t86773.html

I know now that this must be a virus, or the computer is crashing, which is something new to me. I recently installed & ran Fix-It Utilities 8. The scan showed no viruses or spyware, and overall system health excellent.
I also installed Real Player, and then un-installed, because it was behaving strangely, or the system was starting to crash then.
I sure hope someone can help, i don't have a clue. I tried running a virus scan, but the system shut down again, and never sure if I can get it running again.
If I should have moved my previous post to HJT, or started a new topic, I was unsure.

I am basically looking at a fairly clean log. Just a few things to fix.

C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug <– Not recommended as it sometimes bundles other garbage with it, uninstall it via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

C:\Program Files\AWS <– Then delete the folder.


Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up


After you clean up all this, see if you can run this online scanner from Kaspersky.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Hello,
Thank you for the reply, and apologize for the delay in response. My computer has been in for repair, and secondly, I didn't receive an email notification. The problem with the shut down has been fixed. All 3 fans were out.
As for the log file, I'm undecided on whether to remove Weatherbug, unless you suggest it's really a problem, also

All virus scans completed, with no problems.

Hello,

Weathebug is not malicious but they sometimes bundle things with the download, if your happy with it , keep it but you would be better off with the the Weather Program from the Weather Channel.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, do not enable the Tea Timer in Spybot Search and Destroy or they will conflict.
Here are some free programs to install, don't leave home without them
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
    Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and give
    you the option to deny the change.
  • IE-Spyad
    IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
    (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
    painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
    wouldn't access the internet without it.
