Hi DLU and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I'm pretty sure we have Vundo Trojan and others here but let's just make sure.

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe: In your case…C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\HijackThis.exe
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want) - Just make sure to keep the .exe part.
  • Then double-click the renamed HJT to scan and then post the new logfile.
Hi Dave…I was out of town yesterday… I think I may have replied incorrectly a few minutes ago…I'll try again

Hi again Dave..I just wanted to mention that in my AVG vault there are many infections now including..Thanks for all the help Dropper.Agent.GIT BackDoor.Agent.PTA LOP Virus Generic9.AJHP Generic9.AJHQ
OK there it is…

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE
  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

After reviewing your logs we will likely need to have you run a script with combofix. Please give me a little bit to review the log and I will post back with instructions after.

Thanks
Hi Dave here is the log from SDFix..now I'll run the Combofix and post that log..Thanks

Hi,

Looks pretty good. Yes, this new file infecter is nasty. But you didn't get hit nearly as bad as many others are getting it. You can try just re-installing the Weather program. The only thing being infected at this point is the .exe (executable), so a re-install should simply restore it.

Let's do some scans and cleanup to make sure nothing is lurking. Kaspersky will also show any other .exe's that may still be infected.

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.

Please download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.
It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Run AVG

  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button This must done before saving the report
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
      [external image: Posted Image]
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.

Restart into normal mode and post the AVG Log.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Hi Dave, I hope I didn't screw up too bad…I did everything up to and including scanning in safe mode but because in safe mode the resolution made the screen too small…I couldn't find the area to set all elements to Quarantine( I later found it set at delete) until I had the apply all actions button ticked…then it was too late so I tried a new scan. The first scan showed 270 or so infected files including one that had Dropper.agent in it. The second one which I was able to save only had 8 infected files. This is where I stopped and am including the AVG log…What should I do now..I haven't done the Internet Explorer thing yet.( BTW..I use Netscape..will that make a difference?) I'll wait to here from you before I do anything else. And also before I started anything tonite I looked in the AVG vault and found another file infected and deleted…a BYVWU file. ——————————————————— AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report ——————————————————— + Created at: 8:59:54 PM 1/2/2008 + Scan result: :mozilla.70:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\75acz6k2.slt\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Bluestreak : Cleaned. :mozilla.61:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\75acz6k2.slt\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Doubleclick : Cleaned. :mozilla.17:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\0082lckz.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Hitbox : Cleaned. :mozilla.19:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\0082lckz.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Hitbox : Cleaned. :mozilla.8:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\0082lckz.default\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Overture : Cleaned. :mozilla.19:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\75acz6k2.slt\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Pointroll : Cleaned. :mozilla.33:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\75acz6k2.slt\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Pointroll : Cleaned. :mozilla.49:C:\Documents and Settings\Dan's\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\75acz6k2.slt\cookies.txt -> TrackingCookie.Tacoda : Cleaned. ::Report end
No I think you're OK. I would advise you go ahead with running Kaspersky. It doesn't matter what browser you use for your normal web use but you will need to use IE to do the Kaspersky scan.
Hi Dave, I've tried at least 10 times to download the Kaspersky program and it hangs up about half way thru…I even let it go overnite and still won't finish. It seems to hangup with 2 items left to download…whats next?
Let's try another one…

TrendMicro™ HouseCall Java Scan
  • Please go HERE to run the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan.
  • Click Scan now. It's free!
  • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
  • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
  • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
  • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
  • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
  • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
  • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
  • Click the Clean now>> button.
  • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

Post any details about the scan in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
Hi Dave…I'm batting 0 for 2…I can't get Housecall to load either..I've checked the cookie deal and I'm set to except all cookies. I get to the point where housecall say's its updating and installing and it just never goes anywhere. I've let it go for a long time and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong??? I've tried it with both Netscape and Internet Explorer and does the same thing.
