Hi, I've been experiencing a problem where I cannot change my Home Page. The odd thing is it is not stuck to some porn site or other junk site, but is rather stuck to the site that I used as my home page for the last 5 years; my old college website. Needless to say, not that I don't go to that school any more I figure it was time to switch to a more usefull home page; something simple like Google. Unfortunatly I have exhausted every method I know of to try an change it, and it always goes back to the college home page. This includes changing it in the browser internet options, in the control panel, changing it in safe mode, and even in the registry. In fact, trying to change it in the registry produces the message: "Cannot edit Start Page: Error writing the value's new contents."

I'm running XP, and have both Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE Personal fully updated, and completed scans with each. I've also tried to follow some of your "do this before posting" topics, so I downloaded and ran ATF Cleaner, and then downloaded and ran AVG Anti-Spyware in safe mode as instructed.

Unfortunatly it is tough for me to pinpoint when this issue first occured, because due to the nature of my job I tend to be gone for long perods of time, i.e. the last six months. And like I said, this has been my home page for the last 5 years, and I have never really tried to change it untill now, so it could be that old, or it could be a brand new problem.

Anyway, here are the logs from HiJackThis and AVG. Hopefully someone will be able to spot what's wrong.

C:\Downloads\Photoshop 7 install\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 CD Key Generator.exe -> Logger.Delf.ncs : Cleaned with backup (quarantined).

Did your issues start after you downloaded the Adobe Photoshop 7.0 CD Key Generator?

Any reason you are still running XP SP1 and haven't upgraded to SP2?
As I said, I really haven't tried to change my home page for the last 5 years, so I don't know when the problem started. As for SP2, when it first came out there were a bunch of problems with it, and I was told by everyone I know to not install it. I'm sure most of those problems must have been fixed by now, but honnestly I have just never got around to installing it. If you are saying it will likley fix my problem I will give it a try.
After we have it cleaned then you should update to SP2.

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally

After the above:

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Here are the new logs. Thanks for the help so far!

Here is the new log. I tell it to "Fix" the R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://rpinfo.rpi.edu/ line, but it always shows back up when I run the scan again.

AVG found 2 things which have been fixed and deleated. And my computer behaves perfectly normal right now. Nothing would indicate I have any problems at all, other than this stupid stuck home page.

"StartPage Guard (SPG) protects your PC from cyberscam, by detecting and preventing any unauthorized changes to your internet browser's Start and Search pages. It is also capable of removing automatically most of known 'invaders'."
I had tried that program a few days ago, when I was still trying to solve the problem myself. Needless to say, it did not work, so I uninstalled it. I'm not sure why there are still traces of it in the registry, but I can tell you certain that c:\program files\pjw does not exist, let alone any of the sub-folders or the program. And since I was having this problem before I ever downloaded that program, I would highly doubt it is the problem.
Try this:

Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: * files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"StART PAGE"="http://msn.com/"

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
When I tell it to add the information to the registry it gives the following error: Cannot import C:\DOCUME~1\Brian\Desktop\fix.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.
Are you comfortable using regedit? If, so click Start>Run and type regedit >OK

Navigate in the pane on the Left Hand Side to this key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

and click it to highlight it. A list of Programs will appear in the Right Hand pane, right-click this one:

http://rpinfo.rpi.edu/

Select delete

Don't delete any other entries. Exit regedit, rescan with HJT and post a new log.
I am comfortable using REGEDIT. Unfortunatly, when I try to delete the Start Page entry I get the following error: Error Deleting Values Unable to delete all specified values.
Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. This can take several miniutes to load. Now try it. You might need to login as Administrator
I tried in Safe Mode logging in with my normal account, and get the same error message. When I try logging in as Administrator I am able to delete or change the Start Page, but when I restart back in normal mode the Start Page has gone back to what it was before.
