I'd like to get the lowdown on what all is wrong on this machine. Currently, any time I do a search in Google (and I would assume other search engines as well), I get a Toolbar on the left-hand side of Internet Explorer that says IMSORRYInternet Speed Monitor, and shows a bunch of advertisements. This began occurring last night after a power outage. I'm guessing something booted up when the computer restarted.

- Oh, and I am also unable to open AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Live Messenger. I get a message saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Before I went off trying to alter a bunch of carp** to correct this, I figured I would post up and get some feedback, lest I cause another issue.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

The Lowdown is a vundo infection, easy enough to handle most times. Just follow my instructions and it should go away farly quietly.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from ComboFix
  • The report from AVG anti spyware
  • The report from ccleaners uninstall list.
Thank you for the quick response, Bob.

I'm having a bit of a trouble right at the start…I receive the same message that I get with my messenger programs when I attempt to open MSConfig. I rebooted my computer, hoping maybe I could get in, but no luck.

Also, upon the reboot, I got two windows. One said something along the lines of

"File Path C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.exe could not be found."

and the other said

"The file C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.exe could not be found. Please verify the location of the file, or remove its reference from the registry."

I'm going to go ahead and post another HijackThis Log for now.

Don't worry about that ddayv.exe error we can get that in a while.
It's just a virus annoying you.

Following the directions above:
Update Java.. first
Then disregard anything I ask for above.

And do this:

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayv.exe

2. Click start/run and copy and Paste this in exactly using the picture below for reference:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]

3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTING while this is happeneing.
It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet.
This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you.
Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you.

If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer

Any issues at all please be certain to copy and paste the line exactly!

Post the log from comboFix for me located in

And by the way, Happy Holidays!
And Great holiday to you too !

Let's run another cleaner for now while I ask a question from another expert. Seeings it's Chritmas I'm not sure I will here back today.

______________________________

Download and install CCleaner from here

If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.

  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.
Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button.
Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".

Now run the program and click on Run Cleaner
( Do not use the Registry function to clean anything with this program. Having anything auto clean your regisrty is risky).

AVG Anti-Spyware:
________________________________________
Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.

Make a new folder on your desktop. Call it reg finder

Download Reg Finder
Extract the files to that folder on the desktop you just created..
Go into that folder and double click RegFinder.vbs.
If any of your software gives you a warning about running this just allow it. It's safe.
Type in ddayv.exe into the text field that appears and hit enter.
Again… Some protection software may probably flag the script…
just let it run.
It will let you know when its done and a log should pop up ..If it doesn't there will be a file in the folder called results.txt

Post that for me.

The few things Kaspersky found were things we have removed and put away and some in system restore we will remove those now.

Great news ! [external image: Posted Image]

Your log now appears to be clean.

Go to start > run and copy and paste this in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the
system/hidden files and resets System Restore again removing any data that had vundo in it..

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

The infections you had was Vundo and Purity

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
Excellent. I am still having one problem though. MSConfig, AIM, and MSN are all still giving me that error message and will not open. Any ideas?
Sorry that slipped my mind. Let me look into that. When you get the error next post the exact error here. Take the time to write it down so it is exact.
The message reads: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item." Also, for example, when I check the AIM Folder (C:\Program Files\AIM), the icon is not the normal AIM icon anymore. It is a small window icon. Not sure if that is relevant in any way, though.
Check that you have adminstrator privlages. Open control panel /user accts. Look at your user name and make sure you have admin rights. Next try : ________________________________________ Right click on the executable (.exe) ( for both MSM and AIM.)in c:/program files/msm and same for AIM and choose 'Properties' and look to the bottom of the 'General' tab. Here you may find an 'Unblock' button provided to allow normal access to the executable ________________________________ I'm going to ask some colleagues if they have run into this.. Please let me kow if it's resolved or not.
