My computer has been running quite slowly. I plan on installing more RAM but before I do I want to make sure that the problem isn't malware related. A spysweeper run picked up some adware and a new trojan called something-revenue. I included my last clean HTJ post after the new one. The new downloads since our last clean checkup were Yahoo Music Jukebox and ImTOO MOV converter for a video project. I just ran the whole shooting match in safe mode (spysweep, adaware, ccleaner, ATF, Smitfraud), but if we still have more nasties that would be a good reason to finally forbid the dear wife from visiting her (way too old to be socially networking  ) friends' and family's facebook and webshots sites.

Thanks a million in advance. I know with the holidays and the growing popularity of this site that response may be slow. To be honest, I won't be able to check back to this post until 2008, so please don't freeze me out–I will be back!! Happy New Year!

P.S. Since this post I also downloaded AVG Anti-spyware.

P.P.S. I've returned home after a week, started my computer, and the Internet Explorer pop-ups have started again. If necessary I will repost a new HJT log. Thanks.

**P.P.P.S. (12/31/07) OK, after some research and a crosscheck of my new HJT vs. the old one, and used the program to delete the "QDRMODULE" and "QDRDRIVES" that had landed in my program files. I then used add/drop to remove the ISM folder (Internet Speed Monitor or Manager). So far so good. I will place the new HJT below in case anyone gets to this thread, as well as report back on how my computer is behaving. For record, my Ad-Aware, Spysweeper, AVG, and Norton sweeps were clean even though the IE popups were happening, so maybe these qdr-things are new? Thanks.

**P.P.P.P.S.***New Year's Day and no problems yet. I was happy to have noticed the "qdr" folders on my own, but in looking at other threads I realize that I have no idea what "ComboFix" does. Do I have to use this program again? Also, my family insists that the only "sharing" site visited since the last incident has been YouTube. Does this website have a history of giving trojans? I am trying to edit my post and not "bump" it with a reply so that I hear from someone soon…anybody???

**P.P.P.P.S** I have a folder of AskSBar in my program files, but it does not appear to show up in the HJT log. It will not let me delete it or remove. Is this important?

Hello,

Welcome, sorry for the delay. Lets do a few things.

Download VundoFix to your desktop

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

=========================================================

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

===============================================================

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall Hijackthis 1.99.1 and download and install the newer version by Trendmicro

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe

The thieves that have written Vundo have written it to go undected by Hijackthis so we need to rename it to something else so those entries will show up on your log.

This is important , do this and post a new Hijackthis log
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe<– Right click on Hijackthis.exe ( looks like a man with a spyglass ) and rename it to Scanner.exe

  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Let me see the Vundofix log, the Combofix log and a New HJT log renamed please
THanks for the reply! I hope my posts made sense/I didn't harm my computer by acting on my own. I'll post the requested logs in three separate messages. FYI: I renamed HJT in both the Trendmicro folder and on my desktop to "scanner." I did notice that when I check the properties of the desktop icon it says I have version 1.0.0.1. I used your link to download it. However, when I go to Trendmicro's website they advertise version 2.0.2. Did I err somewhere? Thanks, Jeff
Hello Jeff,

Hijackthis is fine, your running the latest version. Originally from the Bronx myself.

Open Notepad and copy all the text inside the quote box by highlighting it all and pressing CTRL C on your keyboard, then paste it into Notepad, make sure there is no space before and above File::

File::
C:\WINDOWS\{00000004-00000000-00000002-00001102-00000004-20061102}.BAK
C:\WINDOWS\system32\VCCLSID.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SrchSTS.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Process.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dumphive.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WS2Fix.exe

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

Save this as CFScript to your desktop.

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

[external image: Posted Image]

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Please download SuperAntiSpyware
Install the program
  • Run SuperAntiSpyware and click: Check for updates
  • Once the update is finished, on the main screen, click: Scan your computer
  • Check: Perform Complete Scan
  • Click Next to start the scan.
Superantispyware scans the computer, and when finished, lists all the infections found.
Make sure everything found has a check next to it, and press: Next
Then, click Finish

It is possible that the program asks to reboot in order to delete some files.

Obtain the SuperAntiSpyware log as follows:
  • Click: Preferences
  • Click the Statistics/Logs tab
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SuperAntiSpyware Scan Log
It opens in your default text editor (such as Notepad)

Please provide the SuperAntiSpyware log in your reply, as well as a new HijackThis log.

Post the New Combofix log, the SAS log and a New HJT log please
Cool, Ken. I move here to L.I. about 10 years ago. Do we see anything major? And is youtube becoming a danger like sites such as myspace?

SAS looks like a great program, Ken, thanks. At one point the Norton kicked up and said it blocked a ISMonitor trojan during the scan, but that was it. Your website looks good as well; I will frequent often to keep up with new programs. The computer seems to be running well. Should I uninstall any of the programs we used for the cleanup?
Combofix will remove ISA Monitor and did not pick it up so I think your ok.

Here are some tips and free programs to install to help keep you more secure. If your ever in a site that asks you to download a Codec to view the page properly, get out of that site. If you ever get a pop up telling you your computer is at risk, click here for a free scan, don't do it, your not infected but you will be if you click that link.

Malware Complaints
Are you mad ? I mean really mad, seething mad, so mad your ready to spit, mad that you have taken your hard earned dollars to buy a computer only to have some Miscredents, Dirt Bags and Cyber Criminals install a malicious program on your computer without your knowledge or consent. You can post your complaint at the above site. If you live in the U.S.A. you can also report your grievance to your State Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection.

  • How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster, you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot.

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.6 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.

Glad we could help

Safe Surfn
Ken
Thanks again, Ken. These latest bouts with malware have definitely altered my family's web surfing habits. Before we close, I was wondering if you could comment on the effectiveness of my protection programs. I seem to be stockpiling them, and I read that often two many of the same type is not good. Are there any that I can remove? Also, do I need to be concerned with the files AskSBar and GoToAssist in my program files? Hello,

Like I pointed out, you should only have ONE ANTI VIRUS AND ONE FIREWALL installed. But you can have a few Anti Spyware apps running. If you use a router with a firewall, thats fine as you can have one Software and One Hardware firewall installed.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Both AVG Anti Spyware and Spysweeper can use some resources, so if you have not paid for them, I would uninstall one, your choice.
