My computer has many problems. It is really slow, there is a little stop sign with an x in it blinking on my task bar, there are constant windows opening with notes saying I'm infected one says it's worm.win32.netsky, I don't click on the other windows to find out what they are. It takes forever to type something like this I keep losing my cursor. I have been corresponding with someone at adwarealert but they tell me the same thing, run hijack this and fix certain things, but they always come back. It is not solving the problems. I am kind of computer retarded so I need some help. I am afraid if someone here can't help I will be forced to pay the Geek Squad hundereds of dollars to fix this here in my home. Please help. hi, lets start with this first: You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix. Please download FixWareout from one of these sites: http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/file…Fixwareout.exe Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure Run fixit box is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal. At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again. Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt
Here is the new hijackthis report -

hi,

Everything appaers normal right now but it did take a very long time toi connect to the internet. Is that normal?

ok good. i dont know what is "a very long time' for you, but no using the tool shouldnt make it take any longer to get on the internet. if you havent yet reboot your computer and your modem and router if you have one.

shelf life
It seems to be normal again. Thank you so much. I have one more question, is it a good idae for me to download and use several spyware programs? I now have spysweeper and adwarealert, should I have more?
hi,

ok good its better. your are welcome.

to answer your question:

I would say two malware app's is plenty to have, and of course one antivirus application. Some malware apps have real time protection that runs in the background like spybots tea timer and AVG's guard, there are others that have this also. these tend to provide the same functions so having more than one running isnt a good idea, they overlap in what they do and will chew up system resources. its fine to have 2 malware apps but dont have two 'real time protection components running at the same time. if any of these is finding malware on your computer (tracking cookies dont count as malware) they can always be supplemented by a online scan.

Piling on more security type software which a lot of people tend to do isnt the answer. it will not protect you any more than having 2 malware app's. i see logs of people that might have 3-4 apps, firewalls etc but still have malware.
the secret is learning how you can get malware in the first place.

Straight from my web page:

The Reality:

There is nothing magical about it. You have malware because of your own actions.

The "Fix:"

It doesn't matter how much you paid for your security suite, who made it, how good it claims to be or even how much "security" type software you have installed. Why? Because you still make the decisions. No software can save you from your own actions.
It's all about: Configuring your computer properly, using some software and mostly about practicing safe hex and good judgment, which is a essential part of the solution.

i like questions. if all is good the last thing to do would be to make new restore points in case the malware got archived in them.

shelf life
Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. I'm sure it was something someone here downloaded that caused the problem. I am frustrated that the Norton and the Spysweeper didn't fix it. I purchased the AdwareAlert after the fact to try to resolve it but it didn't work either. Is the Fixwareout something I should leave on my desktop "just in case"? Last question and then I will leave you alone. This may sound stupid but how do I make new restore points?
hi, there are certain "infections" that require special tools. other antivirus and or antimalware might "flag" it, but are unable to remove it. you should delete fix wareout, most of these tools get updated and would be worthless once the new versions of the malware start making the rounds, which dosnt take long. best bet; practice good judgement and safe hex. your in charge of your computer. if all looks good on your end you can make a new restore point like this: One of the features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is agood idea after malware is removed. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. (winXP) 1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point) On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore.
