Hi leta,

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Hello leta,

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you choose not to remove them, please do not use them until this computer is clean.

OPTIONAL

Messenger Plus! (MessengerPlus2, MessengerPlus3) (MP) is an add-on for Microsoft's free messaging programs Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. It is a 'free' download (with a few stingers in its tail). MP includes an optional Sponsor Program provided by C2Media. The Sponsor Program is commonly known in the anti-spyware and adware world as 'Lop' or 'Lop.com'. There has been a problem since Messenger Plus! first started including the Sponsor Program in approximately May 2003, with users installing the Sponsor Program without understanding what the Sponsor Program is, what it does to a user's system, or the privacy implications involved.

Messenger Plus!, if installed to include the 'sponsor program', will install adware on your computer that generates pop up windows. The Sponsor Program will also change your home page, your search engine settings, place numerous links in IE favorites (including online casino and gambling links) and place more links on your desktop. The search toolbar that is installed cannot be turned off. The pop up advertising windows will appear even if you are running IE's pop-up blocker. This is because the Sponsor Program adds its advertisement URLs to the pop-up blocker exclusion list. If you want to reinstall MessengerPlus3, make sure you click "I refuse, do not install the sponsor program".

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi leta,

It looks better. Is the pc running better now?
———————————————–
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Using Internet Explorer Go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/d…kavwebscan.html and click the Accept button at the end of the page.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded, click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and change the "Scan using the following antivirus database" from standard to extended and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
Well after waiting 3 hours for it to get done the program got an error on the page after it finished but it did not find any viruses. My PC is running great now and there are no quarantine messages coming up anymore. Also, what should i do with the qoobox folder? Here is the new log of HJT:

Post back a new HijackThis log please.
Hey Chriyssi,

So instead of turning tea timer off I uninstalled it. I jut got tired of messing with spybot but before I did I ran into the list of startup items. When I did our 2 mystery files were found in the startup menu. I did an msconfig and disabled them both. I also ran the HJT and deleted those 2 files but could not find them in the explorer or search way you provided. Also, the qoobox folder from combo fix. Should I delete it? Here is a new log

Thanks for everything so far

Hi leta,

You can install Spybot S&D again, but don't have Tea Timer on.
Just use it to scan your pc once in a week. It's a very good Anti-Spyware program. But that of course is up to you.
—————————————————
Since you've disabled those files, can't you see how they look like and then search and delete them via Start > Search > For Files or Folders?

Actually it's the Folders you have to delete.

C:\WINDOWS\SSTEM~1 << this one will have some more letters there after SSTEM and if you double click the folder to open you will see inside the explorer.exe file.
C:\Program Files\Common Files\?racle << this one will probably be at the end of the folders, and if you double click the fodler to open you will see inside the ??oolsv.exe

Please go another round and have a look to remove those folders.
—————————————————
Oh you didn't tell me. Did you find any of those programs in your add/remove and uninstalled it?
I am curious about this, as those infections which came back, are a part of them.
—————————————————

Also, what should i do with the qoobox folder?

I will give you some instructions how to uninstall it later. Not yet.
—————————————————
I really need you to run an on-line scan so i can confirm there is not any more infection on your pc. Since Kaspersky didn't work properly for you, we'll try another scanner.

PANDA ONLINE SCAN
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open…click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report.
—————————————————
Run Combofix again.
—————————————————
Post back:
Panda report.
Combofix report.
I just wanted to give you an update… The folders do not exist. I have tried many ways to access them (except running in safe mode) but everything comes back as not found. I can post a screen shot of what folders they are in and of the common folder if you want but I promise they aren't there. I will run both scans tonight when I get home and have the logs by tomorrow. >> I forgot to say that no those programs where not in the add/remove programs list..
