[Resolved] Extremely slow computer & internet (HiJackThis log

I recently have had a huge slowdown with my computer and on the internet. I consistanly need to hit refresh on the browser a myraid of times before a page loads (even with popular sites such as Google), then it may not load completely. I am just shy of attempting to do a complete reinstall of the OS and programs, but thought I might try HiJackThis as a last resort. Below is my log. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks in Advance!

PS: I am not sure if the protocall is to attach the log or copy & paste, so I did both. Additionally, I notice some products names in the log which i have long ago removed from the machine (such as Semantec), how do I fully get rid of all the remnants?

Hello,

Welcome to the forum. Sorry for the delay but we get a little swamped around here.

Nothing bad on your log, but lets do a few things.

Its possible that you did a bad uninstall of Symantec, you can run this tool to completely remove it from your system, keep in mind that you will now have no Anti Virus protection. If you have no plans to purchase any , let me know and I can link you to some free programs.

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
    deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!





Run this online scan using Internet Explorer: If there is a virus present this program will find it
Kaspersky Online Scanner from Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
Post the log along with a New HJT Log into your next reply.

Ran the Semantec's removal tool. I had CCleaner installed, but i updated it and ran per instructtions. Re Antivirus, I am currently running Zone Alarm Secuity Suite for a trail period, but dont plan on a purchase. On a different PC I run Avast, but it doesnt seem to play well with Zone Alarm basic (free firewall). If you know of a free anti-virus that is compatible with Zone Alarm's basic firewall, I am all ears. I recently installed some software that came with my new Samsung mobile. I subsequently un-installed it, as I thought this was my problem. But now I am concerned that it had a Root-kit in it like Sony tried with their software. Do you think that is it? Attached are the logs. Any other suggestions to improve this PC performance is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Your log looks fine and Kaspersky found nothing bad. As far as a Rootkit that may have been installed by Samsung mobile., its possible, it does include Digital Rights Management (DRM) software

You can run this tool that includes GMER which is a rootkit detector.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the speedy turnaround! FYI- Right before Combofix rebooted my comp, it dispayed some error message, but it was too fast for me to read It also installed a Iexplorer shortcut on the dektop. Regardless the log is below. Also it seems like Semantec still has thier grubby remnants on the machine. Do i have to live with those? Also i saw the remninants of the Samsung software as well as my old BitDefender antivirus. Does Microsoft Uninstall just not do the job properly?

Hello,

Try stopping the Symantec service and then run that removal tool again. If you need help completely removing Symantec you can post in this forum.

  • Go to Start> Run and type in services.msc then press Enter
  • Scroll down to Symantec Core LC
  • Double Click that service to open it.
  • Click on Stop Service.
  • Then change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • OK your way out of the program.


GMER did not pick up a Rootkit, Combofix picked up your Samsung software but if you remove it your product wont work.


SAS, Combofix and your HJT log are all fine, what I am going to do is link you to some windows support sites that deal with slow computers as this forum is for malware removal only. Be sure to tell them you posted here and your log is clean.
