i don't know if any of this information will help, but… this has been a problem for a few months now. i had spyware and adware so i ran various anti-spyware programs, most commonly spybot s&d, but i also use avg free and ccleaner and adware se. i run each on a regular basis, they never detect anything "threatening," but my computer still randomly restarts on its own. it typically has the most problems when i use itunes, specifically when i attempt to update my ipod, which is now almost completely empty. i tried uninstalling itunes and installed an older version, but i'm running into the same problem and it's beyond frustrating. any help i could get, with this log or not, would be GREATLY appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Looks like you're running 2 anti-virus programs.

Never install more than one Antivirus and Firewall! Rather than giving you extra protection, it will decrease the reliability of it seriously!
The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Also because more than one Antivirus and Firewall installed are not compatible with each other, it can cause system performance problems and a serious system slowdown.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove either:
Norton AntiVirus
Grisoft\AVGFREE anti-virus.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
i'm able to browse the internet and work applications most of the time, but randomly i'll get system errors and/or the computer automatically restarting. it has its good and bad days. also, generally when it's having a "bad" day, the monitor will randomly freeze, turn black, and then refresh about a second or two later… as often as 5 times a minute. here's the new log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 8:43:00 AM, on 12/14/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\Program Files\Softex\OmniPass\Omniserv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Softex\OmniPass\OPXPApp.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\PDVDServ.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\browser\ybrwicon.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\Yahoo!\browser\ycommon.exe C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\AIM6\aim6.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\AIM6\aolsoftware.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\SBC Self Support Tool\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us9.hpwis.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us9.hpwis.com/ R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us9.hpwis.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Any reason you haven't updated to XP2?

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
[*]Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

ok, i downloaded the combofix and ran it twice. the first time it got to the "deleting files/folders" part and remained there for 30 minutes, and since i wasn't so careful/cautious of the mouse thing i thought i'd restart and try again… same thing happened again, it ran through the first part fairly quickly and i let it sit at the deleting stage for an hour and nothing happened. i definitely didn't do anything while it was running that time, and also both times explorer went away and all that was on my monitor was my desktop background and the scanner. is that normal? should it be taking this long?and to answer your question, i'd love to update to xp2, but i've only tried recently updating it (in other words, since i've had this problem) and i always get those wonderful system errors so it never completes the update.

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
[*]Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan

[*]This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.

[*]Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.

[*]Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.

[*]Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.

[*]Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.

[*]When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [external image: Posted Image]

[*]If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
[*]After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list

[*]Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv

    [*]Close Dr.Web Cureit.

[*]Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

[*]After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
[*]Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)

[*]Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix.exe" /KillAll

[*]Click OK and this will start ComboFix in a special way.

[*]When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

    Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    * After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

    * Reconnect to the internet

    * Post the following logs/Reports:
      [*]ComboFix.txt

[*]Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:
