Hi,

IE7 HiJacked.

Problem is that when opening IE7, the home page (http://companyweb/default.aspx) is replaced with :
http://wbr4.com/web%20hosting%20company.cf…;rpt=1&kt=1

When closing IE7, the following page pops up in a new window.
http://kolmic.com/searchinfo?q=Web+Hosting…;rpt=2&rm=1

Have gone thru the recommended procedures,
ATF-Cleaner
AVG (Safe Mode)
SUPERAntiSpyware
Panda
Windows Update (Have been running SP2 before the problems reported started), no updates requred.

Would really appreciate some assistance in getting the browser back to normal.

Thanks,
trencoiris

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download FixWareout from this site:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.

Next:

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two

Reboot and "copy/paste" the text file (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi,

It seems that the homepage is now opening w/o being redirected.

Somewhere I found a rec. to remove AntiSpyWare 2007, which I did not find on my computer, but I did remove Ad-Aware2007.
Perhaps I should load that again?

IOBIT Windowscare v2 Personal is now able to update, and seems to be working properly again.

After rebot from ATF Cleaner, I did not get a report, so I can not post that in my response.

HJT Log follows after the FixWareOut log, below.

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.

      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Hi again, Thank you very much! Regarding FireWall, Somehow my Windows Firewall is set to Off, and I can not click the On button, since it is greyed out? Any suggestions on how to get it working again? Regarding AntiVirus. On suggestions from this forum, I installed the free AGV AntiVirus. I was running Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition, and still am. Which one of these should I keep enabled, if it is rec. to have only one AV program running? Thanks Again! LeifK
I would uninstall Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition unless it's a up to date paid for version.

To completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?

3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

Hi,
The Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition is UpToDate as it is paid for by the company I contract/consult with.
My question then is, which one protects my computer the best, AVG or Norton?
LeifK

The Norton AntiVirus Corp. Edition has more then just the AVG anti-virus. I would stay with it.
OK,Thanks, I'll stay with Norton, and disable AVG. It seems that the main issue has be resolved, so I thank you very much for all the assistance. LeifK
