* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [external image: Posted Image]
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.

Hey LDTate,

I was unaware that whatever controls my computer made what-I-Thought-Was-The-Desktop, a Temp! Thanks for pointing that out! ha ha

Ok, so I tried saving the file on several desktops from Documents and Settings, i.e. All Users, Administrator, Family Computer, etc.
but I kept getting the same errors from different folders. I was only able to succeed when entering the information from Safe Mode Administrator account. I don't know why this would make a difference as my regular account has all administrator rights, but I suppose the safe mode keeps the virus from booting. Here's my HJT log from right after entering the info. to the registry– I rescanned with HJT when restarting in normal mode which I'll post after if it makes a difference. If you need me to enter this info into the registry, could you describe a better way for me to do it? I appreciate your patience a TON!!!!!

Also, I kept trying to use Start>search in normal mode but it now gets some error and cannot be used.

Defender
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.

Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Windows Defender's Real Time Protection was already unchecked and WD was not turned is not turned on to scan.
The computer did not behave oddly after items were "fixed".

Something is stopping our fixes.

Please disable CounterSpy, it may hinder in the removal of some HJT entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable CounterSpy:
  • Right Click on the CounterSpy Icon located in your system tray.
  • With your mouse, hover over Active Protection Status (This should be enabled)
  • A menu will slide out, then right click on Disable Active Protection
Once your log is clean please re-enable CounterSpy.

Hey LDTate, Counterspy was and is also not active; it was already set to Disabled when I opened it. I actually haven't had anything actively running virus scanner since we tried to fix these problems way back when. The changes I "fixed" were actually changed right back after I "fixed" them after checking Windows Defender. Is there anything else I can try? I fear I will keep making these changes in the HJT log to no avail.
What have you unchecked using MSConfig? These show that they are loading. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBCSTray] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\SBCSTray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBRegRebootCleaner] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\SBRC.exe Try using Msconfig and uncheck them. Run HijackThis and fix those entries. If that works, open Msconfig and re-check those.
Hey LDTate,

I was able to find those guys in MSCONFIG and uncheck them, and I re-did the HJT fixes, but they seemed to have come back just the same. The items in MSCONFIG were still unchecked after the re-boot, and they were still there before I restarted, so they're not disappearing after I "fix " them.
