Welcome to WhattheTech, hoping we can help you.
What mainenance programs are you running to keep your computer fast and free of nasties?
How long is it since you emptied your temporary internet files.
Please post back with more information about your OS/XP. Is it home or pro and are you running SP/2

Please provide more information, that will make it more likely someone here can help.

Please right click on My Computer on your desktop>scroll down to Properties, and there you will read what OS you are running. It will tell you if you have SP/2
Please read the following thread http://forums.whatthetech.com/index.php?act=SR&f=119
I am not familiar with Cox Security so cannot comment on it.
Are all your definitions up to date with all you Antispyware, and only one Antivirus program? If you have more than one Antivirus program installed they will conflict.
Are you on Dialup or Broadband? We cannot help you with your internet connection until we have much more information. Thank you for being a member here at WhattheTech, and please post back after reading the above thread.
regards,
I followed most of the directions from this site
I used :
spybot
adaware
cwshredder

now cox does have an anti-virus progarm
and my puter is clean now
MAYBE there is too much stuff???
or maybe its all cleaned and I triggered something
I used :
spybot
adaware
cwshredder
hijack this
now cox does have an anti-virus progarm
Hi dbeach,
If you have used Hijackthis without expert advice I am almost certain you have done damage to your computer
Adaware 2007 is an Antispyware program, not an Antivirus program. Do not remove it.
If Cox Security has a Virus program and you are running AVG Antivirus also, there you will have conflict.
I see you are running Windows XP/SP2.
I suggest you follow this site and post a hijackthis log to the correct forum. Do not post on this forum please.
Click on the "site" above, read and follow all the advice. After you post your log, please have patience as the experts are very busy. Your log will be attended to in turn.
kind regards,
You will have to reinstall some programs, especially anti-virus and firewall but some that are installed will continue to work okay.
Would be a very good idea to backup your personal data now, no matter what you decide to do as continuing to work on this problem always raises the possibility of something going wrong, perhaps where you can no longer boot XP or the file system gets corrupted or ….
Before doing this, try resetting WinSock and TCP/IP. May help, won't do any harm:
For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

netsh int ip reset reset.log
