Hi

I am hoping that someone more in the know than me would be able to help me with a Virus/Adware that has infected my computer.
There is now a red background to my desktop with a biohazard symbol on, and text underneath claiming the my desktop/computer privacy is at risk.. I have tried running the free AVG anti-virus software and this found some virus's and trojans but has currently been running for 5 hrs and shows no sign if finishing. Some other lavasoft anti virus software didn't find anything. The other occurences due to the infection are numerous pop-ups some of which are based in internet explorer. Some of these claim to be removal tools from a site called "confidentsurf".

I have run HijackThis but have very little experience in using it and did not wish to cause more problems fixing things that I shouldn't. I have pasted the Log below if anyone could help me with this it would be much appreciated as I need to use my computer for uni work ASAP.

The AVG scan has now finished and found 14 things which I have deleted but the problem still remains, there is now a flashing red circle containing a white cross in the taskbar just to the left of the clock.
Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

As I am still training, my posts to you will be checked by an Expert member. This will ensure that all advice and instructions I give you are accurate and safe. This may mean that my replies may take a little longer.

Thanks for the quick reply and for helping me out, since I first posted the hijackthis log on the forum I have read some of the other posts on the forum and installed Spybot search and destroy which I had previously never heard of, to try and help I have run Hijackthis again and am posting the latest log, as Spybot found some things which I have removed. Hope this helps

Jon

Hi

It's good that you ran AVG AV to get rid of some of the junk, but you should never have more than one Anti-Virus program running at a time as they can conflict, not to mention being resource hogs. I recommend you remove AVG from your system now, as we have plenty of other tools at our disposal.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri), saving to your desktop.
Extract the contents of SmitFraudFix.exe to your desktop.

Open the SmitFraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click SmitfraudFix.cmd.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi

Note: This is not AVG AV that I had you remove, this is a different program.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop
and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition
    files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of
the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then
    select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG anti-spyware, DO NOT run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

It would be a good idea if you print out these instructions or write them down, as you wont have access to the internet.

Next, we need to boot into Safe Mode.
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitFraudFix folder on your desktop and double-click SmitfraudFix.cmd.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Now:
  • Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting
your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.

Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or
programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab
then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little
    time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all
    actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the
screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where
you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the
results of the AVG Anti-Spyware scan.

Please also include a fresh HijackThis log, and describe how your computer is running currently.

Thanks,

jpshortstuff

A quick description of how the computer is running is that the background has changed to a default blue colour and the icons have stopped appearing on the desktop for Cleanup types functions which were actually just html links anyway.

The popups telling me to install privacy software seem to have ceased and the ones telling me that windows is at risk too. All in all the pop-ups seem to have stopped and there is no longer a permanent red picture on the desktop. Thank you very much for your time and help, I know this doesn't necessarily mean that my computer is clean but hopefully getting that way now. Anything more I should do/help futre prevention?

Hi

Lets take a different tack.

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

**Save it to your desktop**

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks,

Hi

Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
O16 - DPF: RaptisoftGameLoader - http://www.miniclip.com/haphazard/raptisoftgameloader.cab

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Click Start >> Control Panel. Double click on Display (or Display Properties) and click on the Desktop tab. Click on Customize Desktop and click the Web tab.
For every item in the Web Pages box (except the "My Current Homepage" entry), uncheck it, and delete it.
Also, have a look at the Lock Desktop Items checkbox and make sure it is unchecked.
Click OK and OK again until you have exited the display properties.

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.
