Just scanned my laptop today after updating it and was stumped upon finding viruses plaguing it. It's been months since I've scanned it so I guess its condition is natural. I have another computer, a desktop brand, but this one is pretty much updated every day so I'm hoping it doesn't have any of the infections my laptop has (files are swapped occasionally with the two). Please help as soon as possible and I hope that the problem will be resolved fast since I have to work and all. Much thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forums

We need to check one at a time. Start with whichever one you want but wait until i tell you it's clean. Then we'll work on the other one.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall

Note:
Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected,
if it does open task-manager > use the processes tab (press ctrl alt and del at the same time) and end
any process's of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know and what process you had to end.
Here are the logs from the HJT and combofix scans, I did this in my laptop…

NOTE:
I did the scanning on both without any internet connection. My desktop was in use at that time and we only have one line in our Internet connection. Because of this a lot of zone alarm pop-ups to ask if we want to connect to the internet, also the main page of IE was changed to that of a yahoo address. Don't know if that was supposed to happen so I'm including it here.
No task manager pop-uped in the course of the combofix scan, only Scotty (winpatrol) pop-uped to ask if the change of host is ok for something. I thought it was part of the combofix and all so I just accepted the change.
If any of the programs need an internet connection I'll be happy to run things again with such included, and will post again a renewed post of the outcome.
You have a Flash Drive infection.

To remove this worm infection, simply download & run this file
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/s…Disinfector.exe

Be sure to insert and flash drives / memory sticks / thumb drives / usb drives.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Thank you for helping me with my computer problems. Hope I am doing alright.
Do this first:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • [external image: Posted Image]
  • If shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
I have done as you said and will update the software bundle every week now… Usually I do update my 2 computers, but lately it has been quite hectic so I didn't have the time to do as such. I have 3 anti-spyware and and an anti-virus software on both my systems, and am an avid updater "slash" scanner of both systems also. I also have a firewall and scotty (winpatrol) installed, and also spyware blaster, spyware guard, and a host of other things that I've picked up along the way in my quest of ensuring my computers a virus-free existence. Again thank you for helping me with my problem. So should we now start with my other computer?
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

I'm really very sorry it's kind of been busy here at home so I just saw the your reply just now. Here are the results of the log files, and I've done all that you've instructed…

P.S.

Thanks again for bearing with my problem and I hope you have a happy day today
:D .
Not usually (3 to 4 times a month I guess), and I use a different net browser that doesn't have the Megaupload toolbar. But my brother and sister might use it occasionally from time to time, so I'm not that sure. Thanks again and have a great day.
