I have recently discovered that my IE and Firefox browsers have been hijacked. Normally, when typing in the address bar, I could simply type "foo" and it would default to a Google search passing "foo" as the search term. Now, I get "http://foo/" in the address bar and a Clckm.com/Network solutions page with sposored ads on it. When I close the tab, I get an additional popup with even more ads. PLEASE HELP!

Please accept my advanced appreciation :)

Would anyone be able to look into this? I am still getting my search page hijacked in both IE and Fireworks, and I am fearing what else may be lingering on my system. I have tried to run AVG Spyware and my stsem comes up clean? Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!
Hello and welcome to the forum.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Thank you for your help… here is the Vundofix.txt results (no infected files?)

We aren't finding anything but lets try this:

* Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found: [external image: Posted Image]
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
I am currently running Dr. Web (full scan). The quick scan initially did not pick up anything. I am wondering if my issue happens to be some type of keylogger. The symtom I have noticed is that IE from time-to-time becomes "un-maximized" on my screen by a few pixels. Also, being a web developer, I am running local web apps that normally would place focus on the first textbox of some form (so the user doesn't need to click to start entering text). This behavior seems to no longer work using standard asp.net techniques as of last week. More food for thought in case it triggers some additional ideas…

You might need to post that issue in another forum here if we can't solve it.
After the full scan completed, the only files it found were some SpyWare tools that I had downlaoded to try to beat this thing, as well as some javascript files for Telerik's RadControl suite that I use in web applications. I still have Dr. Web open and was unsure of what to do. The images that you provide in your directions (above) don't seem to match the interface/version that I am using. Please advise….

We can see if any of the other AVG find the same thing.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\Documents and Settings\msternig\My Documents\Projects\AreaByOwner\AreaByOwner_WEB\RadControls\Editor\Scripts\6_5_2

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

Both files came up clean at Kaspersky: C:\Documents and Settings\msternig\My Documents\Projects\AreaByOwner\AreaByOwner_WEB\RadControls\Editor\Scripts\6_5_2\RadEditor.js C:\Documents and Settings\msternig\My Documents\Projects\AreaByOwner\AreaByOwner_WEB\RadControls\Editor\Scripts\6_5_2\Controls\Controls.js

Both files came up clean at Kaspersky:

C:\Documents and Settings\msternig\My Documents\Projects\AreaByOwner\AreaByOwner_WEB\RadControls\Editor\Scripts\6_5_2\Controls\Controls.js

Then I'd leave them alone.

I don't see any spyware / malware. Post the above here.

Ok, so the Telerik javascript files are okay to leave. But what happens now? It appears from this tool that my machine is not infected. But how do I get my IE/Firefox default search back to normal. And how do I ensure that I don't have anything that some of the tools I've used to this point haven't been able to detect? Whatever guidance you have is more than I can fathom right now…
