Jotti File Submission:
  • Please go to Jotti's malware scan
  • Copy and paste the following file path into the "File to upload & scan"box on the top of the page:

    • C:\WINDOWS\Setup1.exe
  • Click on the submit button
  • Please post the results in your next reply.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Hi Rip Chain :) Sorry for the delayed post, i have crashed at least 5 times in the past 2 - 3 hours because of the extreme heat here, i have moved outside so yeh. This is my jotti's malware scan log. That one looked clean, i dont think it was that. One other thing - I used to get error messages as i logged on saying that the file C:\Program Files\IBM ThinkVantage\Common\Logger\logmon.exe was missing, so i assumed this was a startup item. i totally ignored this because it didnt really effect my computer. i then realised this only happened when my computer got the virus. i decided to go the that file path - C:\Program Files\IBM ThinkVantage\Common\Logger, and i found the file logmon.exe~ so i was thinking, did my virus edit some of my other file names to e.g. exe~ or something? just wanted to clear that up, i thought it would help. thanks. My panda ActiveScan will follow this post. EDIT: I did actually change the filename back to logmon.exe and now i dont get those error messages. any idea what that file actually does?

The problem with that .exe file could just be a coincidence, but in any case I'm glad it's working again :)

EDIT: I did actually change the filename back to logmon.exe and now i dont get those error messages. any idea what that file actually does?

logmon.exe is a part of the IBM ThinkVantage suite application.This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

Go ahead and delete the folder C:\Qoobox

Then post back with a new HijackThis log, and an update on how your computer is running.

Hello lin0056,

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.

  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
    There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:
    *System Protection and Tracing
    *Processes
    *Save created processes to the log
    *Drivers
    *Save loaded drivers to the log
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.

Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
    Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Hi Rip Chain. As gmer kept crashing my computer, i opened my computer in safe mode, using msconfig with the /safeboot switch. i then realised i cannot log on as my computer is on a network so i use a network account. i tried opening safe mode with networking but that doesnt open. so now i have to wait until monday to get help on signing in to my computer instead of my network. sorry for the inconvenience. i will reply as soon as my computer works again.

Hey i have it fixed now. i ran it in safe mode. hope you can read it. EDIT: Removed the Log and uploaded the txt file as the log was too long and had to post it multiple times. if this doesnt suit you, let me know and ill repost the log in parts. thanks.

Hello lin0056,

After consulting with an expert in the field of malware, I've decided to try something else.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
  • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.
-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.

Hi Rip Chain, i was unable to start my computer in safe mode. it keeps crashing saying unable to load video card driver. can we try the original approach? thanks, lin0056

Hello lin0056 :) Unfortunately, the original approach wasn't yielding any needed results. Would it be possible for you to list the exact error message in question here?
