Hello all, I have a really bad spyware problem that started today. Not sure what it is but Avast can't eliminate it. It's localized with IE, multiple IE windows randomly generate. The Security Toolbar 7.1 was added to IE which I disabled but it hasn't stopped the problem. The computer is slowed way down and I keep getting a warning message in the system tray. Hijack this log below, please help, this system wouldn't allow me to attach it.

Thanks

Hi krautmc

I'm Gary R, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
You appear to have one of the Vundo varients, this one hides its processes from HijackThis, so it is necessary to re-name it so we can see what's being hidden.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
  • Rename HijackThis.exe to FredFlintstone.exe
  • Run a new scan with HJT (FredFlintstone) and send me the new log please.
Hi Gary, thanks so much for your help. I've changed the exe to what you said and here's the new log:

Thanks for your help!

Hi Rich,
  • Download combofix.exe by sUBs
  • Alternate Download
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HJT log. (it can also be found at C:\Combofix.txt)
IMPORTANT
  • Do not use your computer while Combofix is running.
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
It is likely your symptoms will disappear after running Combofix, but this does not mean you are clear of infection. There will very likely be processes that are not targetted by Combofix and we'll have to deal with them seperately. So I need to see the logs.
Hi Gary, here are the new combofix and hjt logs:

Hi Rich,

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, the automatic e-mail notification seems to have had a hiccup and I didn't get notified of your post. I always check manually in the mornings just in case.

OK, got rid of some stuff but still a lot to go, this one's going to take a few passes to get rid of it all.
  • Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
  • This will open an empty Notepad file.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into Notepad.

  • Click Format and ensure Wordwrap is unchecked.
  • Save as CFScript.txt to your Desktop.
[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Combofix will now process that file.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HJT log. (it can also be found at C:\Combofix.txt)
Hi Gary, below are the new logs. May I ask which anti-virus/spyware program you personally recommend? I've been using Avast but am pretty disappointed that it let through something so major and couldn't eliminate it.

Hi Rich,

OK latest logs look good, but I'd like to give your computer an overall scan to make sure we've got everything. Combofix and HJT are excellent diagnostic tools, but they don't look in as many places as a good AV scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

IMPORTANT
  • It is unclear from your log whether or not you have a firewall installed.
  • If you have one running, please disregard this.
  • If it is disabled, please enable it.
  • If you are using the firewall that comes with Windows, or Service Pack 2, you should replace it. It doesn't monitor outgoing traffic, so anything on your computer can 'phone home' at will.
Below is a list of some free firewalls (in no order of preference). It is important to note that you should only have one firewall installed at a time, but you can download to your Desktop and install each in turn to see which one you prefer.

Can you send me the Kaspersky log please and a new HJT log.

As for AV programs, as far as I know there's nothing wrong with Avast.

My own favourites (paid for) are Kaspersky and Nod32, not because they are any more effective at blocking or removing infections, but because they are among the fastest to update their definitions to the latest threats, also because they are both light on resources.

Neither of the above would have fared any better at removing Vundo than Avast did.

The main determinant on whether you get infected or not are your own personal browsing habits. AV programs and Firewalls are excellent tools, but if you are tricked into installing undesirable programs in the guise of something useful (they're not called Trojan Horses for nothing), then your protection systems will not usually protect you.

As it is you doing the install, they assume you know what you're installing.
Gary, I have a pretty serious problem. I booted up the infected PC to do the final steps you asked me to and it now requires a password. I've never set a password for this machine and booting into safemode and trying to log in as the admin doesn't work either. What should I do? Is this part of the spyware process? Rich
Never had this happen with the infection you had, I'm gonna have to consult with my colleagues and see if any of them has come across this problem before. Get back to you as soon as possible.
Try booting into Last Known Good Configuration.

Hit F8 on power up as if booting into Safe Mode, but instead of selecting Safe Mode, scan down the list and choose Last Known Good Configuration.

Let me know if you get access.
Phew was able to access via last known configuration. Was that a symptom of the infection? I looked online but couldn't find other reports of this happening to people.

I did all the scans available via Kaspersky and am attaching 2 separate logs that showed problems:

Many thanks,

Hi Rich,

Sorry to say the lock out problem was probably caused by me.

In the last fix I gave you I removed an infected Registry entry, but forgot to replace it with the Default entry.

By Booting to Last Known Good Configuration we restored the "pre-fix" entries, so we'll need to see what has been restored and what we'll need to re fix again.

OK, there's a few things I need you to do.

First

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

Next

Download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\edtmcfwt.exe

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
  • Post the log back here please.

Run Combofix again please (just a normal scan not the CFScript) and send me the log please.

Download FileFind by Atribune.
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the programme.
  • Enter cmd.exe into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.
This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

Run a new HJT scan and send me the log please.

Summary of the logs I need from you in your next post:
  • OTMoveIt log
  • Combofix log
  • FileFind report
  • New HJT log

Please post each log separately to prevent them being cut off by the forum post size limiter.
