Make sure you've done this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

navigate to and delete the following file in bold, if present: C:\WINDOWS\system32\adssite-remove.exe
If asked enter the code

Right-o, found and deleted :D I also threw out a file called adssite_sidebar.exe or something to that effect. I figured, that should probably not be in there too right?

Sorry for the late reply, I just got back from school, gotta love night classes. So I'm about to respond to you and bam…up comes a pop-up. :( This thing is so pesky.

Click "Start"> "Run"> type in Regedit tap Enter Key

Make sure "My Computer" is highlighted

Click "Edit"> "Find"
Type in adssite tap Enter Key.
Right Click on the file if found and select "Delete"

Tap the "F3" Key to find the next entry of the file. Continue using the "F3" Key until it's finished searching.

Close Regedit.


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I've searched my registry, and I just wanted to double check with you before I deleted what I found. I found folders full of adssite stuff rather then just single files, should I delete these entire folders? Haha I'm very tempted to, but I thought I should get the go ahead from you first.

Um registry keys I think? I think I'm calling them folders cause I don't know what else to call them. They are located on the left side of the window in collapsible stacks of other "folders", then to the right there's lists of things I guess in them? But yeah I found three separate adssite key things with lists in them. I probably making no sense at all haha.

You need to create a new restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next:

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • For version with the Installer:
    Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
    Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Now use regedit and kill all adssite stuff

Well I deleted, rebooted, went to start up firefox and there came a pop-up. So I checked my registry again, sure enough the main adssite key was there again. So I deleted it, ran CCleaner, rebooted, started up firefox and I got another pop-up. Seems to be happening so far when I start firefox up. Am I just not deleting from my registry properly? I've tried it three times now and that key keeps showing up in my registry. However, it's only the one, not the other two I had before. Have a great night Tate, and thanks for all the help so far.

Can you post the exact registry key?:

If you still have Combofix, do this:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

  • If shown the disclaimer, Select "2"

If not:

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall

I'll have to download and run Combofix again when I get back from school tonight so I can post you those logs, however I do have the registry key for you: (I've noticed a second one has returned but not the third which if I remember correctly, was something to do with gaming, if that helps any.)
