Please HELP! I think…scratch that…I KNOW my home computer is infected somehow…I keep getting pop-ups with a "Security Alert" warning or "System Performance Monitor: Warning"…and some info is below it with Type, Damage Level, Description, Recommendation, and Protection. It looks and sounds legit, but it won't go away…and when I clicked on it when it first occurred, it took me to a website that could "fix" it…it looked a little fishy so I didn't go any further. I saw on another post (having the same symptoms as myself) to do the following, so I did the ATF Cleaner, ComboFix, and SmitfraudFix…I earlier did Spybot S&D and AVG Anti-Spyware. After doing all this, I'm still having the same issues…the computer is also verrry slow booting up, so I'm hoping there's something I can do to help that out too…THANK YOU SO MUCH for any help you can give!!!

I have attached the following logs: ComboFix, Smitfraudfix, uninstall list, and HJT…

Hi Buck24,

Sorry for the delay in getting to your post. If you still need help here's what I ask. Remove your current version of Combofix and download a fresh version.

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from below:
    Here
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your Anti-virus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.
Thanks Indi…I REALLY appreciate your help!! This is for my kid's computer, and I won't let them use it until I get the bugs out, so they're driving me crazy about it!! You're timing is great and I'm really glad you responded….here are the two logs you requested…

Looking better, how's it running? I would advise some scans at this point.

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is… click active. This should now
    change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
  • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
  • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
  • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.

  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode Now

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Run AVG

  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button This must done before saving the report
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
      [external image: Posted Image]
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
  • Now copy the report back to this topic.
Restart into normal mode and post the AVG Log

======================================

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Hi Indi…things appear to be working much better now…although it is EXTREMELY slow when booting up at startup. No more pop-ups though! Let me know if you have any suggestions regarding the time it takes to startup. Thanks again for all your help!! Here are the two logs you requested…

Did you run AVG? If so do you still have the log? Post if so. If not no big deal. Everything Kaspersky found is either quarantined or in restore points, and we'll clean both those up at the end. Is it just slow starting up? You do have quite a few items running at startup that are not really needed to be. User's choice. Use could try disabling them with msconfig or I could advise on them and you could fix them with HJT. Let me know on those things. Thanks, Dave
Thanks Dave. I did run AVG and it didn't find anything…sorry, I forget to mention that earlier. I just notice it being really slow at start up…but it's my kids (early teens) computer, and they complain about it constantly. I'm sure there is a lot of things in startup that could be disabled, but I'm not sure which ones I should disable and which ones I should keep…perhaps you can help me out with that… Thanks again for all your help!!
These are some optionals or users choice ones. These are from the CastleCops database.

Legend:
"N" - Not required - typically infrequently used tasks that can be started manually if necessary
"U" - User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup - U
Intializes the clock and memory settings on nVidia based graphics cards. Enable if you overclock your card

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe - N
MusicMatch Jukebox icon in the task tray - digital music player / CD burner and ripper / music organizer / playlist creator

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe" - N
DirectCD primarily allows you to drag and drop files onto a suitably formatted CD-RW disc. Unless you use this on a frequent basis it isn't required and is available via Start -> Programs. Start the program before inserting a DirectCD formatted CD-RW in the drive. A re-boot is recommended if you close Adaptec DirectCD before re-opening it again later

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DellTouch] C:\WINDOWS\MMKeybd.exe - U
Dell multimedia keyboard manager. Required if you use the additional keys

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell|Alert] C:\Program Files\Dell\Support\Alert\bin\DAMon.exe - N
"Dell Alert" utility, that's supposed to make interaction with Support easier

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mmtask.exe - N
Part of MusicMatch Jukebox - digital music player / CD burner and ripper / music organizer / playlist creator

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install - N
Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime - N
System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_03\bin\jusched.exe" - N
Checks with Sun's Java updates site to see if newer Java versions are available. Visit http://java.sun.com or just run the Java Plug-In Control Panel

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TraySantaCruz] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tbctray.exe - N
Provides quick access via a System Tray icon to the control panel for Turtle Beach's Santa Cruz or VideoLogic's SonicFury soundcards. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NVMCTRAY.DLL,NvTaskbarInit - N
System Tray icon used to manage settings for nVidia based graphics cards. May be required for some 3D applications to recognize your card correctly - such as the game "Everquest". Otherwise, settings can be changed manually via Display Properties

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [RealPlayer] "C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\realplay.exe" /RunUPGToolCommandReBoot - U
Related to RealPlayer which allows the playing of various video files such as MPEG and AVI. Note: Located in \%Program Files%\Real\RealPlayer\

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EasyLinkAdvisor] "C:\Program Files\Linksys EasyLink Advisor\LinksysAgent.exe" /startup - U
Related to Linksys configuration utility. Note: Located in \%Program Files%\Linksys EasyLink Advisor

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE - U
MS Office

Hope that helps
Dave…how do I go about this? Should I run HJT, then click the box next to the items you mentioned? Then what…click fix? Please advise….I wish I knew what I was doing more, but I don't want to cause more problems than I fix…. Thanks again!

Should I run HJT, then click the box next to the items you mentioned? Then what…click fix?

Exactly, that will do it. It does not remove or harm the program. Just disables it from starting when your computer does. You can then enable them as you need. Some of them you may want to keep, as it says, it's up to users choice. If it's something you use all the time then having running may be the way to go.

Everything Kaspersky found is either quarantined or in restore points, and we'll clean both those up at the end.

Okay…I made some changes…..do I need to do anything else (such as your reference above) or are we all set??
Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]
  • When shown the disclaimer, Select "2"
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show…mp;#entry257163
Okay…did it. But I only got a message indicating that ComboFix was uninstalled…nothing about the other items, but I'm assuming they were all done in the background… Thanks soooo much!! I sincerely appreciate your help and time fixing this for me!! Take Care!
