Simon,
Looks like everything is OK now. I really appreciate your help!
Now as far as future things I can do, I am open to any suggestions you have. Also, do you think those free options (like AVG) are as good as Norton or something else that I would have to pay for?
Simon V.
I think the protection free Anti-Virus programs offer is sufficient for the average computer user. In combination with the programs I will list below, the change you will get reinfected greatly decreases. Anti-Virus programs you have to pay for mostly offer extra functionalities, but the core functions are in the free versions as well. If you choose to buy an Anti-Virus program, I don't recommend Norton. It is a major resource hog (it's badly written), so it slows down your computer immensely. I'd recommend Nod32 or Kaspersky. Now as far as future things I can do, I am open to any suggestions you have. Also, do you think those free options (like AVG) are as good as Norton or something else that I would have to pay for?
Here are the other prevention tips:
Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
Step 1: Turn off System Restore:
- On the desktop, right-click My Computer
- Click Properties
- Click the System Restore tab
- Check Turn off System Restore
- Click Apply, and then click OK
Step 3: Turn on System Restore:
- On the desktop, right-click My Computer
- Click Properties
- Click the System Restore tab
- Uncheck Turn off System Restore
- Click Apply, and then click OK
Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab.
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
- Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Use a Firewall - Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. The Windows firewall isn't sufficient as it only monitors incoming connections.
Here are a few (free) firewalls, please download and install one of them:
- ZoneAlarm
- Kerio Personall Firewall
- Comodo Free Firewall
Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
Install Ad-Aware - Download and install Ad-Aware. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Stand Up and Be Counted! - Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints: Malware Complaints. You have to be registered to post. After registering just find your country room and register your complaint. The infection you had was Vundo (Virtumundo).

I installed ZoneAlarm, but I want to do some clean-up. I have AVG 7.5 anit-spyware. Does this also give me the anti-virus protection of the AVG Free you recommended. Also, I have SuperAntiSpyware.
Should I keep AVG 7.5 or uninstall it and use Spybot Search and Destroy?
In other words, what combination of Antivirus and Anti-spyware should I use? Should I have ZoneAlarm with AVG Free and AVG 7.5 Anti-spyware? Or ZoneAlarm with Kaspersky and Spybot - Search & Destroy, etc??
One other thing, when I restart, my home page tries to change to cnn.com. I noticed it in my HiJackThis log. Can I take it out using HiJackThis so it won't try to change.
Simon V.
Hi
What you should have on your computer: one Anti-Virus program (like AVG Free 7.5), one firewall (like ZoneAlarm), and then as much Anti-Spyware applications as you like (don't overdo it either). I use Spybot Search and Destroy, along with Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster. You can also keep AVG Anti-Spyware (that's something else than AVG Free 7.5, which is an Anti-Virus program!) and SuperAntiSpyware. Try some combinations and see what suits you best - it's mostly a personal preference.
For the homepage issue:
You can set your default homepage in HijackThis. To do this, open HijackThis and click on Config… then under the Main tab, insert the homepage you want into the Default Start Page: field. Then, fix these lines with HijackThis (with all other windows closed):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.foxnews.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.cnn.com/
This way, your homepage will be set to the page you like.

OK Simon,
A few last things. I now have ZoneAlarm, AVG antivirus, AVG antispyware and Spybot S&D. After installing them and uninstalling Norton, I had to restart. When the system shuts down now, it takes longer and tells me that its trying to end "Sysfader" and gives me the option to "End Now". I've never seen this before….I even had to click it a couple of times on one shut down.
Secondly, I've noticed that even though I followed your directions concerning the home page in HiJackThis, Spybot S&D still catches my system attempting to change my homepage from FoxNews.com to Cnn.com. Can't figure this out either.
And lastly, Int Explorer is loading slowly and sometimes I have to click the icon in the tray 2 or 3 times before it will load. I have included a new HiJackThis log below.
Any thoughts?

Hi
For the Sysfader problem, please try this:
Can you tell me what site you'd like as your homepage? Is it FoxNews.com?
I'd like to check some settings. Please do the following:
This is completely up to you, but there are a few other browsers out there, like Mozilla Firefox and Opera. Again, it's a personal preference which browser you use. If the problem with Internet Explorer persists, though, I'd recommend you try one of these out and see if you like it.
For the Sysfader problem, please try this:
- Right-click on My Computer and click Properties.
- Go to the Advanced tab.
- Under Performance click on Settings.
- Under the Visual Effects tab uncheck the first four check boxes.
- These 4 boxes are Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing, Fade or slide menus into view, Fade of slide ToolTips into view and Fade out menu items after clicking. Please note that if you are running other localizations of Windows XP (for example Windows XP Portugese) you have to find the options that somewhat describe the options mentioned above, since they might not be the first 4 options.
Can you tell me what site you'd like as your homepage? Is it FoxNews.com?
I'd like to check some settings. Please do the following:
- Go to Start > Run… and type cmd in the Run box.
- A DOS window will open. Please type start notepad c:\windows\inf\iereset.inf and hit Enter.
- A Notepad file will open. Please post the contents of that file into your next reply.
That can be caused by many things, but your HijackThis log looks clean. And lastly, Int Explorer is loading slowly and sometimes I have to click the icon in the tray 2 or 3 times before it will load.

So the homepage is set correctly now?Lastly, the problem with i.e. didn't happen after restart this time. I'll keep an eye on it for now.

Yes, it should be FoxNews.com.
No the homepage gets set correctly only because spybot s&d catches it and prevents the change. The problem of i.e not opening on the first click was the one I was saying didn't happen last time, so I'll watch it.
Simon V.
Hi
For the homepage problem, try this:
For the homepage problem, try this:

I followed those directions, but I still get a prompt from Spybot S&D that it is stopping an attempted change of my homepage. Do I need to change it back to the backup?
Also, the problem with I.E. not loading until clicked 3 or 4 times is happening again. This started after I did the following from your post yesterday:
"For the homepage issue:
You can set your default homepage in HijackThis. To do this, open HijackThis and click on Config… then under the Main tab, insert the homepage you want into the Default Start Page: field. Then, fix these lines with HijackThis (with all other windows closed):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.foxnews.com/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.cnn.com/"
After restarting is when I noticed I.E. not starting as it should.

Alright… Let's restore everything. I'm going to research this some more and post back to you when I've found something that could fix it. Please do the following now:
- Double-click on ieresetbackup.txt, located on your desktop.
- Go to Start > Run… and type cmd in the Run box.

Simon,
I restored the iereset.inf file.
In HiJackThis, I restored R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.cnn.com/" BUT
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.foxnews.com/ is not there.
What does that mean? Could that be the problem - missing that file?

Simon,
One more thing I noticed relating to I.E. not starting until it is clicked on 3 or 4 times. I have Gmail notifier. It sits in the toolbar next to my clock and opens my Gmail when I click on it, BUT its doing the same thing as I.E. ( I guess since it uses I.E.) and I must click it 5 or so times before it opens.
