Hi.

Im looking for help to get rid of some kind of infection which causes new windows to pop up in firefox -advertising spywaresecure and antispyware, but also to lots of (at least 10) of different pages asking for my contact details. Here are the things I have done so far, and my Hijack this report. I still have the same problem.

My PC has Win XP with Norton Internet security with a firewall running all the time.

Here is what I have done so far.

Scanned with Norton -which found nothing

Scanned using Ad Aware. -which found nothing

Scanned using Spybot -which found the following
Fraud.ProtectionBar
Worldsecurityonline.FakeAlert
MailSkinner.rtk
Spyware-Secure
I removed them.

Scanned Using A squared -which found some tracking cookies which I removed.

Then I found this website followed the instructions and scanned using AVG which found some Adware which was quarantined and produced the following report.

AVG Anti-Spyware - Scan Report

Thanks for taking the time to help.

Roger
Welcome to the forum.

Not much showing in your logs…but try this:

1. Download RVAXO.exe to your desktop.

2. Double click on RVAXO.exe and choose unzip.
It will install to a folder called Rvaxo.

3. Now open up the Rvaxo folder and double click on RVAXO.cmd

You will see a small window pop up, and quickly some lines will run , then the window will close by itself, this is normal behavior.
Then it is possible for an uninstaller of some roque scanner to start up, do not close this but follow all prompts there, and let it run its course.

4. When it's done the computer will reboot…..press any key to reboot.

5. After reboot RVAXO will run again, let it finish

6. After it's done it will create a file called RVAXO-results.log in C:\RVAXO-results.log

7. Copy and paste it back here with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
You can use Uninstall.cmd to remove everything from RVAXO, it will be found in the RVAXO-folder on your desktop.

Next…….

Please download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free)

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes, Let it through your firewall!
Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
  • Close browsers before scanning
  • Scan for tracking cookies
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Ignore System Restore/Volume Information on ME and XP
  • Please leave the others unchecked.
  • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click
Yes.

To retrieve the removal information - please do the following:
  • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
  • Click Preferences . Click the Statistics/Logs tab .
  • Under Scanner Logs , double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log .
  • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
  • Please highlight everything , then right-click and choose copy.
  • Click close and close again to exit the program.
Now please paste the removal information along with a fresh HijackThis log in your reply. If it's a large log, you may need several replies to post it.
Please don't forget the log from RVAXO.

Good Luck, MrC

OK -first thanks so much for your help with this.

Here is the results of all steps that I took. The pop-ups are still there. Mostly adds for spywaresecure removal, but also to a web page asking for my name and email address so I can be sent an uninstaller program. [http://www.pc-on-internet.com/uninstall.php?lg= ]

Nothing was found in the SUPERAntiSpyware scan.

OK, lets try this:

1. Clean out temp files: ATF Cleaner
Download ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All (cookies optional)
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All (cookies optional)
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All (cookies optional)
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

——————-

Go to your control panels add/remove programs and uninstall Spyware-Secure if listed.

——————–

Delete these files - folders if found:

%UserProfile%\Spyware-Secure
C:\Program Files\Spyware-Secure
%UserProfile%\Desktop\Spyware-Secure.lnk
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\NSIS_SpywareSecure_trial_setup.exe
C:\WINDOWS\pack.epk

———————–

Copy and paste the text below into notepad and save it as fix.reg
Make sure the Save as type field says All files.
Save it to your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Spyware-Secure"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Spyware-Secure]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Spyware-Secure]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Spyware-Secure]

If you did it right it should look like this:
[external image: Posted Image]

Now double click on it and allow it to merge into the registry.

———————-

Download the Registry Search Tool at this link:

http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/ (it's about halfway down)

Unzip it and run it. (If your antivirus inteferes you may have to disable script blocking in the antivirus.) Put the following in the search box and hit OK.

epk_extr

Post the results.

—————

Let me know, MrC
OK, I cleaned out the temp files. I couldnt find any of the spywaresecure related files in the places you said on my machine. I merged fix.reg into the registry. I ran the registry search tool with the result: -No instances of epk_extr were found. Roger
OK, no wonder you can't find it.

Looks like you downloaded a program that was add supported and that's why you are getting the pop-ups.

You have decided to uninstall the software Favorit contextual advertising component that you downloaded jointly with the software on your computer.

The software you downloaded was free as it was paid by advertising. Using the software meant occasionally seeing some advertising pop-ups from the Favorit contextual advertising component. The pop-ups were linked to the pages you were visiting, but at no time was information on your surfing habits ever registered.

As soon as you have uninstalled the Favorit contextual advertising component, you will no longer have any pop-ups or advertising messages from this product on your computer.

However, you will not be able to use its free functionalities anymore.

—————————————–

Download BlackLight rootkit eliminator from the link below:
ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe

Double click on it to install

Click the Scan button…then if anything is found

Click the Cleaning button

Let me know, MrC
Hi Mr C

Thanks for you reply.

Downloaded and ran fsbl. Which didnt find anything.

Im usually pretty careful about what I download and install and I would not knowingly agree to any advertising on my PC. The FAVORIT website looks pretty dodgy to me and I dont trust them. I have no idea what these free functionalities are that they talk about. Whatever it is it is not worth the constant pop-ups.

Ethics
By no means is the FAVORIT contextual advertising component a spyware. It does not collect any confidential information on users. Additionally, the FAVORIT component does not hijack home pages, promote illegal content, nor alter or add items to user’s favorites. It does not modify security related settings, prevent security related softwares from running, or alter cookies or urls. In no case is the FAVORIT component’s purpose to receive credit for affiliate driven sales.

"Contextual advertising" or spyware whatever you call it, it is still there.

R
Mr C Oh one more thing, my firewall -Norton has just identified winyinup.exe as trying to access the internet. -I blocked it. Any idea as to what this might be? R
There's nothing on that file but I would delete it but keep the file in your recycle bin.

If you have a problem doing that…use this method:

1. Please download OTMoveIt by OldTimer to your desktop.
2. Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Where it says: "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved", copy and paste next blue part into that Window:

winyinup.exe (copy the FULL path of the file such as C:\WINDOWS\winyinup.exe)

3. Then click the red Moveit! button below.
This will display the results in the right windows where it says Results on top
4. Copy and paste everything present in the Results window (right window) and save these results in notepad and save it on your desktop, because I need to see those results afterwards.
5. Close OTMoveIt

Note:
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

——————

Run ComboFix…it will give us a list of file installed in the last 30 days as well as other info:

Download combofix.exe To Your Desktop from the link below:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
A window will open with a warning.
Type "Y" (and Enter) to start the fix.
When the scan completes it will open a text window.
Please attach that log back here together with a fresh HJT log.
Caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed.
The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.

Combofix will automatically save the log file to C:\combofix.txt

—————————–

Lets run another program also….RootkitRevealer

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern…itRevealer.mspx

Download is at the bottom of the page.

——————–

Let me know, MrC
Ok I ran OTMoveIT. I made a mistake the file was PinyinUp not Winyinup. Sorry about that -it was late. It was part of some tv streaming software I recently downloaded. [for watching UK football matches streamed from Asia!!]

I also ran OTMoveIT on these dat files codqdsndhc, codqdsndhc_nav, and codqdsndhc_navps which I thought were suspicious when I saw them in a list of my startup Items. I hope I did the right thing…

Also Comboxfix diddnt get on with Nortons which thought it was suspicious so I had to force Nortons to quit while Comboxfix finished. Again I hope I did the right thing.

C:\Program files\SogouInput\Pinyinup.exe moved successfully.

OK, looks like we are getting somewhere now.
It appears the files you moved are part of the infection.

Please do this:

Please download Navilog1 by IL-MAFIOSO:
http://perso.orange.fr/il.mafioso/Navifix/Navilog1.zip

Extract its contents to the desktop.
Double click on navilog1.exe to install it on your computer.
When the installation is complete, the tool will start automatically.
If it doesn't start automatically, please double click on Navilog1 shortcut on your desktop to run it.
Press E for English from the language Menu.
Type 1 in the next Menu to select Search and press Enter.
Wait for the Scan to finish (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
Press any key as requested .
A new document will be produced: fixnavi.txt.
Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.
The report is also saved in the root of the directory, "%SystemDrive%\fixnavi.txt". (usually C:\fixnavi.txt)

MrC
Hi Mr C
Glad to hear we are getting somewhere.

Pop-ups seem to have abated -which is great. Lets hope it lasts…. My browser -firefox is not quite right tho and I think it is blocking some popups, but also the downloads window no longer shows the progress bar for downloaded files.

Installed and ran NaviLog.

Here she is.

First I have to thank Angelfire777 from CastleCops for helping out here with the rootkit logs.

Looks like you deleted the malware with OTMoveIt
codqdsndhc, codqdsndhc_nav, and codqdsndhc_navps

Navilog1 didn't find anything but would have found those files.

Did you sort out the other problems? MrC
Hi, Mr C Great sounds like good news then. Would I be right in thinking my machine is all clear? I did a google on codqdsndhc and it came up with your thread on CastleCops -and also the article at blog.spywareguide. I dont know what what software it piggybacked onto my machine with but I diddnt download messenger skinner. Anyway thanks so much to you and to Anglefire777. I really appreciate your help. Regarding the other issues with firefox -I did a reinstall and all is now working fine. Is now a good time to ask your advice on my firewall and antivirus protection? I am running Norton Internet security and Spybots tea timer. Does this sound like a reasonable amount of protection? Thanks again. Roger
