Your logs look clear now.

Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately. Besides they're updated regularly so won't be of any use against future infections
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • Now delete OTMoveIt.exe (if present).
As far as I can see, your computer looks clear of infection now.

Are you still noticing any problems ?
  • If you are let me know about them.
  • If not it's time to make your computer more secure.
Below are a series of recommendations which will help you keep more secure online.

Obviously you have already taken care of some of the issues mentioned, but it is important that you read through them, and address any that you may have missed.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to clean the restore points.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • NOTE: only do this once, NOT on a regular basis.
Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can and are using to infect systems.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components. This is important as it's still possible to get infected through an old install even if you're using the latest version of Java.
  • Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3, and install it to your computer.

Updating Windows and Internet Explorer
It is essential you keep your Operating System up to date with all the latest patches. The bad guys watch for the latest exploits, as soon as Microsoft brings out a patch, the bad guys will bring out an infection to exploit that vulnerability. If you don't have all the latest patches your computer is vulnerable. Please go to the windows update site and get the critical updates.

Use a "secure" browser
Install Internet Explorer 7 or an alternative browser like Firefox or Opera for more secure surfing.
Please remember that there is no such thing as a totally secure browser. Your browsing habits will be the major factor in determining just how safe you are online. If you visit, Crack/Warez sites, Porn sites, or other sites of a questionable nature, you still run a severe risk of getting infected.

The following are free programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A brief description is included with each item, click on name to go to download site.
  • Adaware SE Personal
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
  • Spybot S & D
Spybot is a scanner like Adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and protection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
  • SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
  • IE Spyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones LIST. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages can't do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies). Use IE Spyad for single account computers, and IE Spyad 2 for multi account computers.
  • Hosts file:
  • Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file, here.
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
  • If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It's very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - LIST of free Anti virus programs
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one.
  • Site Advisor This is a utility that can be downloaded and installed. It loads an icon to the taskbar of your browser (versions for IE and Firefox), indicating the trustworthiness of the site you are on. Green for safe, Red for suspicious. Click on the icon to access details that SiteAdvisor has about the site.
Here's links to a few articles which are well worth reading Finally

NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
[external image: Posted Image]
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Smitfraud……. (if not, post in the Is your infection not listed here? topic). Please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to government or government agencies that something will get done.

Hello again Gary R. Im not sure if it is related, but during every startup, Windows installer repeadedly attempts to install a program called Sonic Manager Update. Is this a necessary program, and if not how would you recommended I rid myself of it alltogether? Also, my firewall alerts me of two programs, protector.exe and porka.exe trying to access the internet. Im unfamiliar with these programs. Have you heard of them? Thanks again! :D
Sonic Update Manager is a legitimate process that goes with the other Sonic programmes installed on your computer.

However it is not necessary for it to activate at startup. If you do not wish it to do so, do the following.
  • Click Start > Run then type MSConfig click OK
  • The System Configuration window will open.
    • Click the Startup tab.
    • Uncheck the Sonic Update Manager entry then click OK.
    • You will be prompted to restart your computer, do so.
  • When you re-start you will get a window informing you that your startup has changed.
  • Check do not show me this again and exit the window.
Looks like there might be something hidden on your computer that was not detected by Kaspersky.

We just removed Porkaa.exe, so it is worrying that it is back, Protector.exe is a file that is sometimes associated with a Rootkit which would explain why it was not seen by Kaspersky.

Download GMER and unzip it to your Desktop. (It will create a folder GMER)

Alternate Download Site
  • Disconnect from the Internet, and close all running programmes.
  • There is a small chance this programme may crash your computer, so save any work you have open.
  • Open the GMER folder, and double click gmer.exe
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at programme start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan ….. click OK.
  • If no warning:
    • Click Rootkit tab.
    • Ensure that All the boxes to the right of the program are checked except Show All.
    • Click Scan.
  • Do not use your computer while the scan is running.
  • Once scan is finished click Copy.
    • Click Start > Run then type Notepad.exe then click OK.
    • This will open a Notepad file.
    • Hit Ctrl+V to paste log into it.
    • Save the log to your Desktop.
  • Reconnect to internet and post the log please.
Also can you run a new HJT scan please and send me the log.
Hello again. I disabled/re enabled my recovery, un-installed and re-installed java, and I ran a windows update. I installed the new IE 7 and everything is working beautifully. Here is a copy of the gmer log you requested.

OK, don't see any signs of Rootkit activity on your computer, the only processes seen by GMER are ones from the various protection programmes you have fitted, and that I'd expect to see there.

Similarly your HJT log looks clear.

Can we have a look for the programmes you reported please, see if we can find where they're located.

Download FileFind by Atribune.
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the programme.
  • Enter protector.exe into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.
This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

Repeat for porka.exe and Porkaa.exe please.
Hello Again! I did the following: I downloaded and ran FileFind, which did return a result for protector.exe. In the middle of the search, AVG popped up with the following message. "Threat Detected While opening file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\protector.exe Trojan horse Proxy.SNM" AVG gave me the option to 'Heal' so I did that. I hope that was ok. Here is the log (which is the same location windows search yeilded) C:\WINDOWS\system32\protector.exe - 15360 Bytes As for porkaa.exe and porka.exe: No files were found. Looks like it was successfully removed.
OK, there's no reason to suppose that AVG didn't remove the protector.exe file, however I'd like to just make sure.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\protector.exe

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
The log should show the file as not present, and if it is present it will remove it.

Let me know what happens please.

In case you've already removed OTMoveIt, it can be downloaded again from HERE
Hello there. You got it, the results from OMoveIt came up negative. "File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\protector.exe not found. Created on 11/12/2007 08:29:36". I opened the quarantined files in avg and found protector.exe, porkaa.exe, and another file named ntio256.sys.
Seems you had a backdoor (RAT) on your computer.

The files protector.exe and ntio256.sys are part of a trojan backdoor.

http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/trojbckdrqho.html

Since the driver ntio256.sys did not show in your GMER scan, it is reasonable to suppose it is no longer present. The Quarantine files of AVG are encrypted, so the copies held there are of no danger to you.

However, you have had a Remote Access Trojan on your computer at some point, so your attacker has had access to your computer. Because of this I'd advise you to do the following.

Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions. Inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

Change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

IF YOU USE THIS COMPUTER FOR ONLINE BANKING OR OTHER FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS, OR HAVE DATA OF A CONFIDENTIAL NATURE ON IT, MY RECOMMENDATION IS THAT YOU RE-FORMAT AND RE-INSTALL YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND PROGRAMMES. WE CAN NEVER BE TOTALLY SURE WE HAVE GOT RID OF ALL MODIFICATIONS WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE ATTACKER, AND THEREFORE CANNOT GUARANTEE THE SAFETY OF YOUR DATA.

If you choose to re-format, instructions for doing so can be found HERE (courtesy of wng_z3r0).

Can you run another Kaspersky online scan please and post me the log.
Hi There. I took appropriate actions with my bank and other areas at 'risk'. I feel confident that these measures will protect me. I appreciate that advice. I ran kaspersky again as requested and several times during the scan, AVG alerted me to "Detected Threats". I would say that this happened a total of 4-6 times. Below is an example of one of the alerts along with my updated Kaspersky scan log. Thanks again! AVG ALERT: Threat Detected! The file you are being warned about is one of your System Restore points. They cannot re-infect you unless you do a restore.

To clear it out do the following.
There's an infected file or two in your Recycle folder, to clear them out do the following.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch it.
  • Copy/Paste the contents of the box below into the left hand pane of OTMoveIt.

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3086648619-700988103-3538634864-1008\Dc13\us0105.exe
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3086648619-700988103-3538634864-1008\Dc21\xlavba8.exe
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-3086648619-700988103-3538634864-1008\Dc24\Reboot.exe

  • Click the Move It button.
  • The list will be processed and the results will appear in the right hand pane.
  • If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
  • When finished click Exit to exit the programme.
  • A log C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log will be created (where mmddyyyy_hhmmss are numbers giving date and time the log was created).
Look at the log, any problems removing these files get back to me.

If not.
All goes well then it looks like you're clean.

Follow the directions in my earlier "all clean" speech for advice on securing your computer.

PS. I see you've enrolled at MRU (Malware Removal University), I'm a Mentor over there, so I'll no doubt be bumping into you from time to time.
I can't tell you how impressed I am with the help I have receieved from you. You are part of the reason I have decided to enroll to educate myself to help others. Thanks again, and yes I've already been reading all of your posts in the classrooms!
Always glad to help where we can. I say we, not because I have royal pretensions :D , but because removing Malware is always a team effort. Good luck with your studies at MRU.
