Hello,

My son's pc seems to have been hijacked…
He complained that pages which he didn't search for were being displayed, and any search in google brings up a variety of, what appear to be, alternative search pages (including Jeeves and other's I've not seen before), which list various sites with similar names… a correctly typed address will usually work, though.

Spybot and Adaware scans brought up a few critical items, which have been dealt with, (sorry, did this first and didn't make a note of them) and CWShredder found no problems… but the problem seemed to persist…

I went through LDTate's page, and ran ATF cleaner, Spybot(again) and AVG in safe mode…

ATF did fid something called Zlob.DNSchanger (to do with TCP/IP settings) and this was removed.

I did boot up again just to see if it had become fixed (well, I thought.. why not?!?!) -but no changes I'm afraid… searches are still being re-directed.

so here is the AVG report:

-Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice you might be able to offer :(

Hello and welcome to the forum.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download FixWareout from this site:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text that will open (report.txt) Please save this file, you'll need to post it with a new HijackThis log.

Next:

Now lets check some settings on your system.
Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections

Then right click on your Default Connection
Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
Left click on Properties
Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks

Next:

I don't see a anti-virus program running. Get this free one.

Click HERE Click the Download Now and Save, Install, Update and run a full scan.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" the text file (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the help so far, LDTate,

this is quite a fat reply I'm afraid….

I've gone through those steps, and here are the results:

Here's the FixWareout report:

In Control Panel, my network connections are, I think….. unusual(?)

📎NetworkConnections.jpg

……….Not sure how unorthodox this is (?!) -but it does work (!)
The pc was bought second-hand from a work colleague.
It had a network card installed, but I never had it connected.
I installed a Wireless Network card recently, and the Internet Properties (TCP/IP) are to be found by right-clicking the Network Bridge

Within Internet Properties (TCP/IP) 'Obtain DNS Servers Automatically' was already selected

The AVG scan found 9 items, and here is the report:

The PC seems to be behaving fine -it's not sluggish at all. The only problem seems to be the re-direction to these un-requested search pages.

I'm not sure if this has any relevance, but a little while ago, the pc had a major crash, with the warning :

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\congif\system

I followed some advice to fix this, using a recovery console disc and also Emergency Boot CD -the problem was fixed in that I could get back to windows, but not my old data. As a result I have separate log-on identities now, one for myself and one for my son. I've been doing all the above while logged-on as my son, as the pc was infected while he was logged on. Both identities have administrator rights.

I'm not sure if this set-up is good/bad/indifferent/..unbelievably awful(!) -much like the network connection set-up -I don't know a great deal about these things -but they seemed to work OK, and I assume (always dangerous, I know..) that it won't have a direct liink to the infection which you're helping me with here….
Also, because the pc was bought second-hand a good few years ago, I don't have the XP install cds, and I don't think it's running SP2..
(sorry if this catalogue of information just sounds like one huge nightmare!)

So I think that's the full picture of this old PC and it's current state -hope it's some help.

thanks again LDTate,

Bill.
I don't see a anti-virus program running. Get this free one.

Click HERE and Save, Install, Update and run a full scan.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment
Thanks LDTate,

Grisoft AVG was installed, but I'm not sure why it wasn't showing.
-but the link in your last reply returned a 404NotFound error (not sure why)

anyway,

as per instructions, here is the AVG report:

…and yes, still getting redirected, now as well as obscure search pages loading, I'm getting pop-ups for search pages and one entitled
"win an i-pod MSN windows" ( I thought I had pop-ups blocked, but I'm not so sure now?!?!)

what do you think?
You need to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection and we'll be wasting our time trying to clean it.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.
(DO NOT INSTALL SP2 at this time)

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet. Please go to
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the cirtical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update
Oh dear, we seem to have hit a problem at the first step.. trying to install SP1a results in a warning window telling me the certification key is invalid…. The PC was bought second-hand from a work colleague ….about 4 years ago, with windows up and running…. What would you recommend here, please, LDTate? Thanks, Bill.

You should be able to contact Microsoft to find out if your windows is a legit copy. If it is, they can help you with the updates and give you a new key. If it isn't a legit copy you'll need to purchase one.

Is there a lable on the box with a windows tag?
