As I say, the machine seems to be back to normal.

Thanks.
Kaspersky found some items, which we can deal with now I think.

1. Delete the system.exe file in the following locations. You may need to enable hidden files and folders.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Please reverse this process once the fix is complete.

Delete these files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Louis\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Nippy\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Oliver\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Rachel\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe

2. Empty out your Spybot S&D Recovery folder. Here:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery

3. Empty your Norton quarantine folder.

4. Delete the tools we had you use and any folders/files that were created using them.

SDFix
Smitfraudfix

5. Empty your Recycle Bin.

I'll have you clean out your restore points when we're deemed all clean here. Reboot, post a new HTJ log, and let me know how it's running.
Hi Dave,
Maybe it was a false dawn. It's back again…!
It seemed good and I had just completed the last instructions when I got the security message. Unfortunately I guess I need to download all the tools again? Let me know.

My kids were on the machine today, and maybe the system.exe files in their startup re-started the infection? Just guessing.

Anyway, here is HJT log.

Really appreciate your help.
Uhgg…. :wacko: Back to the drawing board here huh. Let's see… Did you delete these files? C:\Documents and Settings\Louis\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Nippy\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Oliver\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Rachel\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe Are these all the users on the machine? A total of 4? Please give me HJT logs from each account. And we'll have to rethink the strategy here a bit I think.
Hi Dave,
I did delete those files.

I have a total of 6 accounts. All six HJT's are coming below…

James

Nippy and Work are dormant accounts and can be deleted if that's quicker….

Keep the faith!
Yes, I would recommend you delete those accounts. That may make it a bit easier and if you aren't going to use them it will tidy things up. You can go ahead and do that. While you are I will formulate a strategy and get back to you ASAP. Thanks, we'll get this… Dave
I am giving you the download link to SDFix again as I am not sure if you deleted it yet or not. If so there you have it, if not no need to re-download.

As SDFix appeared to get this last time until it was "relaunched" let's give it another go. Get your accounts set up first. Run this from the main account. Then before logging on to any other accounts let's try to make sure we have all of the files in startup deleted this time. I will advise after seeing the logs after running SDFix again.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
Hi again,
Did the latest tasks - strange thing though… i found i had restrictions on the machine that prevented me getting to control panel. I therefore could not delete the dormant accounts. As a test, I re-started in safe mode and logged in as Administrator but still had no access to control panel (not visible on my start menu, so i tried running control.exe directly, but was refused rights as "restricted".)

Encouragingly, having now completed SDfix, Control Panel is back in the start menu, so it was obviously related to the malware… hadn't noticed that previously.

I will delete the dormant accounts now.

Here is my sdfix log

No warning message!

I checked and found that all user accounts (except mine) have the system.exe file in start-up. I have deleted them all again, but will stop anyone logging in until i hear from you.

Thanks.

i found i had restrictions on the machine that prevented me getting to control panel.

Yes, that is exactly what happens with this infection. And one of the many nice things about SDFix is it remedies that without having to do a separate reg edit.

SDFix got the one in yours.

Deleted
C:\Documents and Settings\James\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\system.exe

Nice job on getting the rest.

Now, we also need to make sure the autorun.exe file is gone too. SDFix noted it but doesn't say whether it deleted it or not. Here is the location as you can see from the log:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\autorun.exe -

Make sure it is removed from that location.

Also, what might be a good idea at this point is to do an all out search on each of those files and make sure there are none lurking somewhere.

To do that:
Start > Search > All Files And Folders
Under More Advanced Options, make sure the following are checked:
*Search system folders
*Search hidden files and folders
*Search subfolders

Delete all instances of each one of those files. If you have problems deleting them note the location and try it in Safe Mode. Then empty your recycle bin.

Now, if all goes well I would recommend you reboot and log into each of your 4 remaining accounts, and get a HJT log from each to post here. Hopefully this gets it.

Good luck.
Dave
So far so good… searched and found some lurking copies (in "backups") deleted all.

logged in to each account and all seems OK. HJT logs following

Thanks
We're not out of the woods yet I'm afraid. While it appears some of the nasties may be gone this one has come back.

WinAVX

This is a Smitfraud infection.

Not sure if you still have the tool from earlier but if so delete that and download a fresh one.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Boot to Safe Mode on your main account.

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with a fresh HJT log. Just from your main account right now anyway.
Hello Dave,

Let me know what you find.

By the way - as some general advice… i'm thinkning of dropping my subscription with Norton AV and going over to the simpler AVG free AV. I use it on another machine and it seems just as effective.

I'm going to stick with Zone Alarm for the FW, but use AVG for spyware and virus i think.

Do you have a view on that?

Also - I got windows defender recently - people told me it was "great" It seems very low-key which is not a bad thing of course…, but does it work?

thanks for you help (again).

Good plan in my book…AVG uses much less resources so you should see a performance gain. And has also been getting good reviews for detection rates. :thumbup:

It works, it's not bad. Like you said it's low key, doesn't use much resources and acts as another level of real time protection. Can't beat the price right? I have it on one of my machines and every once in a while it will perk up and warn me about something, usually something I'm doing as I'm always changing things. I'll give you a couple of other "low key" free tools to use too if you're interested.

HJT looks clean, sounds like it's running well. So let's wrap up.

You can remove the Smitfraudfix and SDFix tools, and all associated folders.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which may be infected anyway).

Click Start>Help and Support>Undo changes to your computer with System Restore
Select Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create

Click Start>Run and type Cleanmgr
Click the More Options Tab.
Click Clean Up in the System Restore section.

In addition to updating and using what you currently have you may want to consider the following:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly or set your computer to receive automatic updates. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Use IESpy-Ad -
IESpy-Ad will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Thanks for the tips and advice for the future protection. Great work on getting this cleaned up. Thanks again for everything and I'll definitely be recommending the forum to my friends (if they're unlucky enough to need help too). :D
