Every time i turn my computer on a strange box comes up and i am not sure what it is. the only writing in the box is symbols.(computer language) i have Norton antivirus, Ad-aware, Ad watch, and AVG anti-spyware. I have ran a scan with all of them but come up with nothing other than tracking cookies and they block/remove them. i do update them. antivirus checks everyday and the other check once a week for updates. also when i start up it takes forever for my desktop to come up. its like something is running in the background but nothing is showing in the process list that is unusial. I dont know what else to do. Please help if you can. Thank You! Katie

Hello and welcome to the forums

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.

Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
ok i have one problem. the strange box is still there. i did everything like you said. but nothing seems different. could there be something else wrong?
my husband has a nextel that has the ActiveSync thing on it. but that doesnt even run like that page was saying. and it isnt running now. i am in the process of downloading the spyware things you sudgested and running them. the norton i have is a payed subscription to norton system works. my windows update thing is set to update automaticly every other day. and norton is set to check for updates everyday.
I wish there was a way to show you the box that come up when windows starts up. you cant read what it says b/c it has some kind of computer language in it. and it comes up every time. windows will not load unless you click ok in the box. then windows loads fine. could that be a windows error?
also i was fixing to download IE-SPYAD but it says it is compatiable with….. Compatibility: This ad/spy server "Restricted Zone" list can be used with the following versions of Internet Explorer: Internet Explorer 6.0 (incl. SP1) Internet Explorer 5.5 (incl. SP1 & SP2) Internet Explorer 5.01 (incl. SP1 & SP2) Internet Explorer 5.0 Internet Explorer 4.01 (incl. SP1 & SP2) Internet Explorer 4.0 Note: this file works only with Internet Explorer; it will have no effect whatsoever on Opera, Mozilla, Netscape 6.0/7.0, or the older Netscape Navigator/Communicator. i have iexplorer 7 will that make a differance?

also i was fixing to download IE-SPYAD but it says it is compatiable with

Use Spyware Blaster instead.

Reboot and let me know if that helped.
The only strange thing I see is this. I don't know what it is:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\InstallShieldSetup]
C:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~1\{70093~1\setup.exe -rebootC:\PROGRA~1\INSTAL~1\{70093~1\reboot.ini -l0x9

Open notepad and copy and paste next bold in it:

regedit /e startup.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
start notepad startup.txt
