Hi Clint,

Welcome to the forums, my name is Dave.

Doesn't look like Smitfraud, and I don't see really any malicious activity here.

Did you have McAfee installed on here at one time? Looks like it didn't completely clean up and there are services still running. Also, you have KeaneTel Toolbar - a Conduit/EffectiveBrand "Free Community" toolbar - modifies the default IE SearchHook. Some Conduit toolbars are reputed to have a certain adware/trackware functionality. I would recommend removing it. Check in Add or Remove programs and remove from there if possible.

Then, to make sure all is gone:

Please copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop McProxy
sc delete McProxy
sc stop McRedirector
sc delete McRedirector
del /q Fixservices.bat
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window may appear to open and close. This is normal.

Run HijackThis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R3 - URLSearchHook: KeaneTel Toolbar - {638980bd-2f94-43c2-b39e-ce7c42670ee0} - C:\Program Files\KeaneTel\tbKea1.dll
O2 - BHO: KeaneTel Toolbar - {638980bd-2f94-43c2-b39e-ce7c42670ee0} - C:\Program Files\KeaneTel\tbKea1.dll
O3 - Toolbar: KeaneTel Toolbar - {638980bd-2f94-43c2-b39e-ce7c42670ee0} - C:\Program Files\KeaneTel\tbKea1.dll
O23 - Service: McAfee Proxy Service (McProxy) - Unknown owner - c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\mcproxy\mcproxy.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: McAfee Redirector Service (McRedirector) - Unknown owner - c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\redirsvc\redirsvc.exe (file missing)

Then close all windows except this one and press Fix checked.

Download CCleaner

CCleaner Setup and Usage

1. Before first use, check under Options, Advanced, and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours".
2. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
3. Then select the items you wish to clean up. (See Note 1 below)

In the Windows Tab:Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer". If you prefer to keep your cookies, uncheck the Cookies entry. Deleting cookies will require re-entry of user names and passwords
on next visit to sites that require users log in.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section.
Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
Clean any others that you choose.
In the Applications Tab:Clean all (optionally, except cookies) in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section. ==> Important: See Note 2 below before proceeding
Clean any others that you choose.
4. Then click the "Run Cleaner" button and it will scan and clean your system.
Click exit.

See if those steps help. If not there are still some items you probably don't need running at startup.
Indigenius, thanks for your help. You mention See Note 1 and See Note 2, but I do not know where those notes are. I have the CCleaner ready to use but want to read Note 2 first (per instructions). I removed the McAfee stuff. 1 point and 1 follow up questions. Keanetel toolbar is for work; anyway, the problem with my computer slowing down happens when using either IE or Firefox, which does not have a connection to the Keanetel toolbar. So wouldn't it make sense that the Keanetel toolbar is not the culprit sense the slowing happens when the toolbar is not even involved? The intention behind my question is purely a simple question–because I am no expert on how these things work in conjunction with one another.
Sorry looks like my "canned" for CCleaner has some problems. Here is another.

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders.
If you have anything in a temp folder,
back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
——————————————-

If you use the toolbar for work by all means keep it. It is not likely slowing you down but there is some debate whether it is entirely malware free or not. Toolbars are typically intergrated into the web browser so theoretically they can cause issues with browsers. But leave it alone.

——————————————–

Try CCleaner and post a new HJT log. Let me know if it's any better or not. Is it only when using internet? Or is the computer slow all around?
Yes, still having problems. CCleaner did remove a bunch of files but nothing changed regarding computer functioning. Here is what happens: when I use IE or Firefox, the computer gets slower and slower, until timeouts start happening; if I get off the Internet then computer speed returns. Recently (the last day or so), I cannot even log on to yahoo email 75% of the time.

thanks for your help

Wow, Kaspersky is squeaky clean. Rare, it will usually find something. That's good news, and I don't think this is malware related, but I assume you're still having issues.

Now the internet slowdown issue. You say it happens with both IE and Firefox? Is it just your browsing that slows, or the whole PC performance? Do you have to reboot your computer to regain normal operation, or just restart the browser? I'll see what I can think of may be happening. If I can't get it worked out with you I can refer you over to the tech area where they deal with "non-malware" related issues.
All operations slow down when using IE or Firefox. If I shut down browsers and programs, usually the application software (like Excel) will start working faster. Generally, I will restart the computer. Another point: I will run AVG Anti-spyware and restore original host files with Hoster 3.1; then computer will function better for a while. If I begin to use IE, over the cross of 2-3 hours all operations begin to run slower and slower; eventually the browser will have timeouts. Then I start all over again. Since AVG takes about an hour and a half, this is a very tedious process. Hope this helps.
Hmm… I wonder if one of your security programs is causing this. Or some kind of conflict. Have you tried temporarily disabling them to see if things change? The other note I saw….you have 2 anti-spyware programs running real time. While this isn't as bad as having 2 AV's or 2 Firewalls it is a bit of an overkill. You could try disabling at least one of them, either SAS or AVG, see if that helps. Because it happens with both IE and Firefox that makes me think it's not a browser issue. It is interesting after you reset your hosts file that this goes away temporarily. Is your hosts file getting modified as you run your PC? It shouldn't unless you tell it to or let a program like SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, ect… change it for you.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
