Hello Buck24,

Welcome to the forum. You have a few major nasties going on that we need to fix.

Do this first , its very important.
C:\HJT-3\HijackThis.exe <–Go here and right click on the HJT Icon, (looks like a red stick of dynamite with a plunger) and rename it to Scanner.exe.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Please download SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

I need to see …
1. Combofix log
2. Smitfraud log
3. New HJT with it renamed to Scanner.exe
Thanks for the help Ken! I really appreciate it. I did as you requested, and the logs follow…

BTW…what are the "major nasties" you were referring to, and how did they get on my computer? I thought I had a decent virus program…

Thanks again for your help!

»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» End
The nasties you have mainly are related to the Smitfraud trojan and some other things related to WinAntiSpyware 2006 and possibly another worm. Sometimes this stuff slips by AV programs.

Before we proceed, lets update your Java as the older versions had some holes in it that may be letting this garbage in.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 3 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

Lets proceed removing the Smitfraud Trojan

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware Free to your desktop.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware Free , locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run Ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon Update then select the Update now link.
  • Next select the Start Update button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the Scanner icon at the top of the screen, then select the Settings tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on Recommended actions and then select Quarantine <– Dont forget this
  • Under Reports
  • Select Automatically generate report after every scan
  • Un-Select Only if threats were found
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free <– Do not run the scan yet.

Boot your computer into Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut Off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly.
  • This will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

  • Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.
  • You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
  • The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".
  • The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart into normal Windows.
  • A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware Free by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the Scanner icon at the top and then the Scan tab then click on Complete System Scan.
  • AVG will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select Apply all actions
  • Next select the Reports icon at the top.
  • Select the Save report as button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system
  • make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware Free
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process:

Reboot normally.

  • Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
  • Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
  • Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.
Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Post the log from Smitfraud fix, the AVG Spyware log and a New HJT log please
Hi Ken… Ran into a bit of a problem….I did as you requested (updated Java, installed AVG, and booted in Safe Mode), but when I got to the part about cleaning the registry, I got the message "Registry Editing has been disabled by your administrator". I no longer work for the company that I got my laptop from, but I think I know the administrator password…the question is, how do I enable Registry Editing? Hopefully this isn't much of a roadblock…please let me know how to change the Registry Editing… Thanks again.
Hi Ken…
I figured out how edit the registry (thanks to Windows on-line help), so I was able to complete your instructions. The only problem that occured was with the AVG Anti-Spyware Free program….I did everything as stated…clicked "apply all actions"…then went to "reports"…but it said "No Reports Available", so I was unable to save the report. There were about 55 files that were tagged having been infected (I think 3 were high risk). So I copied the other two logss you requested…

Thanks again for all your help…let me know what needs to be done next (if anything)..

Ken… I don't know what happened….last night everything was running fine, and even faster than normal! But this morning when booting up, it gets stuck at the "DELL" screen where it has F2 and F12 in the upper right corner. I left it like that for about 20 minutes and nothing….so I rebooted and it is stuck at the same screen again. I am now on my children's computer, but can't access my main work pc…what do I do now!??! Also, would it be possible for me to run a HJT log on this computer and have you look at it, or do I need to start a new thread? This thing has been running verrry slow for the last few weeks… Thanks again.
Do this on the computer that wont boot up.

Press the Power Button and then start taping the F8 key, don't hold it down, just tap it somewhat rapidly, a menu should appear, use your up and down arrows on the keyboard to scroll to LAST KNOWN GOOD and hit enter. It should boot up, if not do the same thing and this time select SAFEMODE. If it starts in Safemode, then you can do a normal windows shut down/ Restart and it should start

Lets get this resolved first and then you can post your other log.
Okay…that seemed to work. It booted up…slowly (but I think you said it would boot up slowly a few times from the changes that I made). So once it booted up, I re-booted to make sure everything was cool…and everything seems good!! So thanks!! Another question…do I need all these programs (these were added on the occasions that I used this board now and in the past): CC Cleaner Ad-Aware SE SmitFraudFix ComboFix AVG Anti-Spyware ATF-Cleaner Can I delete some of these…or should I keep them all? Thanks…
Buck,

You can drag these to the trash.
ATF-Cleaner
SmitFraudFix
ComboFix

You can keep these.
CC Cleaner
Ad-Aware SE
AVG Anti-Spyware

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads
(cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 2.0 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and
painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
  • Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I
wouldn't access the internet without it.

You can go ahead and post the other log if you wish and I will take a look at it
Thanks, Ken….I REALLY appreciate it…

Here's the log from my other PC…

Buck,

What I would do is uninstall MyWebSearch via the Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel
http://www.castlecops.com/startuplist-15187.html

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch <– Delete this folder

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 2 <–This is what you need to download and install.

The rest of the log looks fine, nothing major on it malware wise.

Post a new log and lets make sure mywebsearch is gone.
Hi Ken…
When we're through with this pc, I think another issue just came up with the original computer. When I try to change my desktop picture, I get a message "Restrictions - This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". I was able to get into it before…I don't know what happened!?!

But first things first…Here's the latest HJT log for the 2nd pc…
