Browser Highjacking by Security Toolbar 7.1 – trojan/virus notices pop ups, desktop icons, flashing warning on task bar

Initial scans by NoAdware, AdAware SE found:

Trojan.Downloader.VBD9F5
— HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\xpre (only I could never find this file via regedit)

Trojan.192A!dldr
— HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\wr

Trojan.192A!dldr
—HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\wr

*couldn't find these files manually via regedit either, but they came up in spyware scans.

———————————–

TrojanDownlaoder.Win32.Agent.e
— C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\geedb.dll

*did locate this, but could not be removed manually or via HJT

In HJT logfile, the security tool bar that highjacked my browser had this location:
—C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\pkyqdxxv.dll

*I could find this file easily, but it could not be removed manually or via HJT.

Some HJT functions were prohibited/interfered with – esp. in Misc Tools

——————————————-

Initially, here's what I did:

1. Removed Norton AntiVirus, and replaced with McAfee (was going to do it anyway)

From SAFE MODE:

1. Ran a couple of Vundo Fix programs (one was Symantecs) - both indicated Vundo removed.
2. SDFix (RunThis.bat)
3. SmitfraudFix
4. RogueFix
5. Ewido - AVG

All of this was done over a period of time (HOURS)…following steps from previous cases here.. & not all at once… it was trial and error. None of the steps or programs resolved the highjacking by Security Toolbar.

I removed the programs, thinking perhaps there was an imcompatibility issue… and installed the ONE PROGRAM that appears to remove the problem:
SuperAntiSpyware

This seems to be the only program that actually removes the Security Toolbar 7.1, ends the browser highjackings, and ends the popups. The icons disappear from my desktop as well.

After several hours of slowly trying to sort the problem out… it appeared my computer was repaired.

I switched from IE to Mozilla Firefox.

Once I rebooted - fresh, with hopefully no problems.. McAfee immediately found WinFix and removed it.
Then.. it found Vundo and removed it.
Then there was another trojan (only I didn't get the name)

Seemed o.k. - opened my Outlook Express, and received another Vundo report from McAfee.

Then the highjacking by Security Toolbar 7.1 began again.

I've repeated the steps that removed it (SuperAntiSpyware from Safe Mode).. and it's gone.. and I'm HERE - telling you about it, because I know there's still something NOT RIGHT.. and I'm expecting it to come back.

Questions:

1. Should I run the removal tools with my System Restore disabled (and in Safe Mode)?
2. Should I remove IE program/files/etc entirely from my computer, as this seems to run only on an IE browser (when I was highjacked again, and a new browser page popped up, it was IE, not Firefox).
3. Some sites have suggested renaming the HJT file because some viruses and trojans recognize it .. thoughts?

Additional info:

1. My Microsoft and Windows Explorer Updates have been unable to function, and Microsoft has been unable to determine why I get the error messages stating updates could not be done. This is an ongoing mystery (months long) that I'm still trying to sort out. Could this be allowing the Trojan/Worm/Virus to keep coming back?

My HJT log follows… I have Combo Fix, SmitfraudFix, SuperAntiSpyware, ATF, NoAdware, AdAware SE remaining on my desktop.

Thank you for any assistance you can offer … I'm tired.

~Kim

Hi Kim P,

I'm sure you are tired, sounds like you have been having a real battle!

1. Should I run the removal tools with my System Restore disabled (and in Safe Mode)?
2. Should I remove IE program/files/etc entirely from my computer, as this seems to run only on an IE browser (when I was highjacked again, and a new browser page popped up, it was IE, not Firefox).
3. Some sites have suggested renaming the HJT file because some viruses and trojans recognize it .. thoughts?

1. Please do not disable System Restore, an infected Restore Point is better than no Restore Point at all. We will clean System Restore once the infection has been removed.
2. No need, we will clean the infection
3. We may do this in due course but there is no need just yet.

I recommend you follow my instructions and I'm confident we can remove the malware on your machine. For reasons of safety, please do not run any more tools on your machine apart from the ones I instruct you to; also, use normal mode (i.e. not Safe Mode) unless instructed.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
Silver..
First.. THANK YOU. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for helping me try to tackle this problem.
Looks like I'm not alone! Is it just me, or does everyone seem to be having the same issue?

(We have LOW low memory – and was just getting ready to upgrade the memory when all this happened.. but so far, the ol' gal is holding up).

Thanks again,
Kim

Hi Kim P.,

Yes this is a prevalent infection, and you have a very nasty version of it, but don't worry we'll get it resolved for you :)

Please download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.
Once complete, please post the ComboFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Thanks again for your help.
After installing memory upgrade (1gb), I had to run SuperAntiSpyware yesterday (out of desperation), which takes the flashing icon/pop ups/highjacked browser away for at least a short time. Not sure if this has an effect on the outcome of Combo Fix.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!

Once complete, please post the new ComboFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Good Morning, Silver!

Hi Kim P.

The procedure didn't work because you are using an old version of ComboFix, so please delete the copy you have. It will require another two runs with the new version so we'll do things differently:

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, find Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2 and remove it. This are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 3) from here

You have a program called NoAdware v4.0 installed on your computer. This program was until recently classified as a Rogue antispyware program. Typically, rogue programs do not provide any security benefits, and use false positives to goad users into purchasing a full version of the program. Due to it's tainted history, and the availability of more reputable programs for free, I strongly suggest you remove it - to do so, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for NoAdware v4.0 and remove it.

————————————————————————

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray (the grey castle), select Exit and OK the prompt. Windows Defender will automatically start next time you reboot.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C92B957B-4767-4E53-A63C-1E547C35F0C6} - C:\WINNT\system32\ljjjihi.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jddbxoto - jddbxoto.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: orxcorjo - orxcorjo.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pkyqdxxv - pkyqdxxv.dll (file missing)

There are restrictions on the IE control panel in place, this may have been done by protection software like Spybot S&D, however if you wish to remove these then check this line also:

O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

You have tomcoyote.org in your Trusted Zone. Any sites in the Trusted Zone are a security risk, so unless you need it to be there in order for the site (which is now called WhatTheTech) to work then please remove it by checking this line:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://forums.tomcoyote.org

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

————————————————————————

Download OTMoveIt to your desktop. and double-click the program to start it.
Select the contents of the below file list, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
In OTMoveIt, click in the left-hand pane and press Ctrl+V to paste the file-list into the program
Then, press MoveIt!
If the program asks you to reboot now, click No
Copy the Results output and paste it into a new notepad file so you can post it in your next response. Do this by clicking in the right-hand pane, press Ctrl-A then Ctrl-C to select all and copy. Then open Notepad, press Ctrl-V to paste in the text, and save this text file to your desktop.

OTMoveIt file list:
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\geedb.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\pkyqdxxv.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\jddbxoto.dll
C:\WINNT\System32\pkyqdxxv.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\bdswoetc.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\orxcorjo.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\wpceojgn.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\ogxurukq.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\qpqss.bak2
C:\WINNT\system32\qpqss.bak1
C:\WINNT\system32\ssqpq.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\oqtwa.ini2
C:\WINNT\system32\awigtsht.dll
Then reboot your computer to complete the removals.

————————————————————————

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All… and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks]
"{C92B957B-4767-4E53-A63C-1E547C35F0C6}"=-

"System"=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00
Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:[external image: Posted Image]
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.

————————————————————————

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Copy/paste the following quote box into Notepad. Before starting select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.

@echo off
dir /a C:\WINNT\system32\oTt02e >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\results.txt"
dir /a C:\TEMP\fCOe >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\results.txt"
regedit /a tmp1.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa
regedit /a tmp2.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon"
regedit /a tmp3.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks"
type tmp1.txt >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\results.txt"
type tmp2.txt >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\results.txt"
type tmp3.txt >> "%userprofile%\Desktop\results.txt"
del tmp1.txt
del tmp2.txt
del tmp3.txt

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal. Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed. Post the contents of this file in your next response.

————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report, the results.txt output and a new HijackThis log.
I had a hunch I had the outdated version of ComboFix. FWIW, I loaded the updated one, just in case we need it later.
Thanks again..
~Kim

Hi Kim P,

Good job, things are looking much better :)

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Kim P.,

Please press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c rd /q /s C:\WINNT\system32\oTt02e && rd /q /s C:\TEMP\fCOe

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Clean up with OTMoveIt:
  • Close all programs apart from OTMoveIt as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
Once complete, let me know if you had any problems with the instructions and how your computer is running.
Computer's running great – with only a few exceptions….

This has been an ongoing mystery since loading STOPzilla on my computer back in July (paid version), then losing my ability to load updates on the same date > contacted STOPzilla, who seemed to acknowledge the conflict by directing me to uinstalling, then reinstalling an improved version > then futher discussion with them about the loss of the ability to load MS Security and Defender Updates led to them giving me instructions on uninstalling the 2nd version I loaded, and an automatic refund. No help with trying to undo the damage, and no admission or denial that STOPzilla disabled my UPDATES capabilities. :(

Hoping that all the processes we've gone through in this thread might have helped restore Updates (since it has done WONDERS for my computer in general) – I tried to give it a hopeful shot after rebooting the computer this a.m.

Unfortunately, I still cannot run Windows/Microsoft/Defender updates AT ALL…. and when I tried to upload Defender updates, after MANY MANY minutes of loading and loading… an error message read that Defender updates could not be loaded.

When I try to go to the Microsoft updates website FROM "tools" in Defender, it states that the address could not be found.

When I go to the MS Update website – it loads and loads and loads for a good 10 min. or so – finally gets to the "check for updates" page, then freezes (ctrl alt delete – then END NOW — yada yada, and everything shuts down).

I've posted a thread at the Microsoft Windows forum here, but was advised to wait until I was done resolving the virus/malware issues I've been working on with you.

If you have any clue as to how to repair the MS Updates issues – I'm all ears. But if I need to move that dilemma to my thread at the MS Forum… I'll be off to that next, pending your diagnosis that my computer is now clean. :)

It's been an ongoing issue, and I fear it's what's leaving my computer vulnerable to attacks… as I am behind by 16 Security Updates, and cannot use Defender.

I don't know if you need it - but I'll post one last HJT log below, just in case.

I can't thank you enough for your assistance and patience with all this! I've waited to make my donation until we were through - and as soon as I get the all clear, one will be forthcoming.

This is truly a public service that you guys perform - and an education for the rest of us. :)

~Kim in NY

Hi Kim P.,

Great to hear things have improved and I think your machine is clean of malware :)

However, I'm very sorry to hear about the troubles you have had, the StopZilla incident sounds very frustrating, and you are right that updates are crucial for your security so it's very important you get the issue resolved as quickly as possible.

My recommendation would be to first try the Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter and see if that helps resolve the problem:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

Unless that completely resolves the issue, then I would recommend the Windows forum here at WhatTheTech as the next step, the experts there are sure to provide excellent advice.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=33687

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
Before I download the programs you've suggested, can you tell me what programs I should remove and/or keep that are currently downloaded? Here's what I've got: Ad-Aware SE Personal ATF Cleaner SuperAntiSpyware - free edition FixReg eRunt Will any of these conflict with the ones you've recommended? As for windows updates issues – I know the troubleshooter page well.. LOL I received tech help from MS, but none of their steps resolved the problem. Will take it to the MSWindows forum & see what suggestions I can glean there. Going to go read the tutorials for the programs you've recommended now – and will wait to see if you recall any conflicts between them and what I've currently got on my computer. I plan to replace McAfee with Kaspersky – however – at $79, will have to wait just a bit since we just purchased McAfee (which I bought in a moment of desperation.. LOL). ~Kim
