Hi,
Strange things are happening with my computer. I get pop-ups and now I can't find my control panel button to add/remove programs. I tried to startup in safemode but my mouse doesn't respond when it boots up in safemode. I tried to follow some of the instructions given in-before you post but nothing is working.Please help. Thanks in advance. :)

My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

You are currently using an unpatched version of Microsoft XP. It is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1a
Please visit this link:
Microsoft Service Pack 1a

and install Service Pack 1a. If you run into troubles, please post them here.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT update to Service pack 2. Doing so before your computer is clean can cause Windows to become unstable.
We will update to SP2 when you are clean.


Please post back with a HJT log and your computer running with Service pack 1a, or with any problems you are having updating.

Thanks for your reply Scotty. When I go to MS to download the update it tells me to go to start,then control panel-my control panel is no where to be found. :o

Warning. Please note that this fix is specific for this poster and should not be used by anyone else:

1. Before we make changes to your registry, we need to make a back up of the key that we are going to work on:

1.
Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
    Here
  • For version with the Installer:
    Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • For the zipped version:
    Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

2. Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoControlPanel"=dword:00000000

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes.

Let me know if that restores the Control Panel.

Thankyou; my control panel is back but my computer is still acting up. The hard drive goes crazy and than it shut down and it tries to reboot but alarms and bell gp off. I have to cut power to the unit for about 15min. and start up again.
