Hello Whatthetech team. I have the same problem as another post I read on this message board which is, when I connect to the internet I am redirected to a page named www.161816.com and various other pages with similar URLs and a small dot appears in the top left of my browser (Firefox). After this happens my internet connection goes very slow. The person who posted their problem however, was running vista and I'm on XP professional otherwise I would have tried following their instructions.
Anyway heres some extra information to help you help me.

I believe I first got the problem when I came to my university accomodation and connected to the internet from here (this is where I live now).
Since I have been living at university I have been using windows firewall which I have been told is not very good. (At home my brother managed all the protection).

I have tried various virus and spy ware scanners and cleaners.
AVG
Ad-aware
Trojan Hunter
Housecall
ATF-Cleaner

I have also tried a system restore which didnt help either.

Any help would be much appreciated. Rob

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

________________________________________________

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Next:
Click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter key
Copy/Paste: ipconfig /flushdns

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

If you have internet connection problems do this:

Please go to Start -> Control Panel, and choose Network Connections.
Then right click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up, and left click on properties.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Click OK twice, and restart your computer.

Are you on a router?
I myself am not using a router, however I don't know how the network here (at my university accomodation) works.
I connect an ethernet cable from my computer to the socket in the wall.
Then when I open my browsers I am brought to a web page belonging to my university.
I have to enter a log-in and password here and check a terms and conditions box.
Once this is done I'm redirected to my homepage and have an active internet connection, this is usually when I'm redirected once again to www.161816.com etc.

That's the best I can describe my problem, sorry.

Rob.
OK Have been looking into this.
Seems very possible that this problem is NOT on your computer but rather in the uni's system.
Have a look here.
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Serious_worm…ion_t84020.html

What I would suggest you do is ( I am assuming this is a laptop) if possible take to a friends house and hook up to there internet and see if this problem does not happen there. If it doesn't it's not you but rather in the uni's system.

We will get another scan to look around a bit.

Hello again, I've followed all the instructions in your last post and read that other message. I'm not using a laptop I have a desktop PC and taking it home or to a freinds house is not possible until decemeber. A few things I will try however is checking whether the same happens on any of my house mates computers and I have emailed ISD (internet services division) who are the people which provide my student house with Internet services asking if they know anything about the problem. Until I can test that out or get a reply to my email, I will be very grateful of any extra help in the mean time. -Note- For some reason kaspersky didn't work in firefox and wouldn't let me "agree" to the terms and conditions so I ran the scan in Internet Explorer and here it is: ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT Thursday, October 18, 2007 2:12:12 AM Operating System: You will have to use INTERNET explorer for most of these on line scans . They require an Active X object. Something not available with Firefox.

Remember this is only a theory so far about this being at the university's end. I can't find anything much more in English to prove it. ;)

Are you still being redirected after this deletion ?
Hi, sorry for the late response I have been home on the weekend. I've made the deletions as you said and so far so good. However when the problem was occuring previously it seemed at bit random as to when it would happen so I will give it a few days and see if it re-occurs, if it does i'll add another reply if I don't reply you can assume all is well and thank you very much for your time and help. Rob Cartlidge
Please respond back after 2 days to let me know.
There are some things we need to do once your all clean to be certain it doesn't come back. We would rather know for sure than to assume ;)
Hello again, just as I came online to say everything is still okay I got redirected straight from my homepage. So the problem is still here. Anything else I could try? Thanks Rob
Lets have a look at your hosts file.

  • Then click on "Restore MS host file Hosts" to restore your Hosts file to its default condidtion..
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against further infection.
  • Close program when complete.

PLease let me know.
Also post another HJT log for me to go over again.
I don't know whether I did the HostsXpert instructions correct as when I paste what's on the clipboard it comes up with:
localhost

Anyway here's the HJT log so far no redirection but as I said before it seems random to me, so I'll wait a while and get back to whether it's occuring or not. Thanks - Rob:
