Basically, when I boot Windows, the desktop appears for a few seconds while it loads, then totally disappears. I manage to open firefox by clicking on the default browser button on my Keypad, otherwise I can't do anything. I've tried ctrl, alt + delete to access the task manager, and nothing happens. There also is no start menu, lol, there's nothing, I can only move in between programs with alt + tab….. =/

I've tried removing it with the latest update of Spybot S&D, I've tried AVG anti-virus, and I've tried AFT; they've all been successful in removing 'harmful files', but not successful in eliminating the problem.

Anyways, here's my log of Hijack This. Could anybody please tell me which I should delete, and which I shouldn't delete? Thanks, here it is: (need any other information? Ask me for it.)

Hi,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I'm not seeing anything malicious, but you're only running in Safe Mode.

Some questions to ask yourself…what were you doing just before this happened? Did you make any changes of any kind? Install something new? You get the idea….

This might help with fixing your issue.

Do you use a RegCure program? If so for what?

Have you tried going back to a restore point, before your issues started?

Let me know and maybe we can help. If it's not malware related the guys over in the "other computer problems" area are excellent too.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Microsoft_Windows_f119.html

Good luck.
Dave
Yep, thanks for showing your help and support. First of all, I was typing the message on behalf of a friend, because it is his Computer that is messed up, and I wrote to you guys from his computer. Anyways, we did try and get a log from HijackThis, but it just keeps closing itself when I attempted to save the log. It seems impossible to return to a restore point, because there is no way to gain access to the Control Panel or any other System Tools found on the start menu. I've tried running CMD from the WINDOWS/System32 folder, and opening Control Panel from there. It begins to load something, then stops, and nothing opens. Perhaps if there's a way to access System Restore points from beginning at the location of My Documents, then it may be possible. But I dunno, I've never seen anything like it before. I've also tried doing the screen-shot method. Which meant going into C:\\WINDOWS\System32\mspaint.exe, but this didn't work either. Anything that could help, just refuses to load. He says it happened completely randomly, while he was playing World Of Warcraft. It was fine one second, then WHOOPH, everything disappeared. A few days ago, it worked fine for a day, and then the next day onwards it stopped working (desktop completely disappeared). I don't really know what to make of it anymore. Hopefully you guys can help =/ Any ideas what it could be? Heard of anything like it before?
Let's try this, and see if we can at least get access to the Control Panel back. This should work in Safe Mode. Not sure here though, this is a strange one. I'm thinking it could be a driver issue or something else? That's why I was seeing if you could go back to a restore point.

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT

* Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it.
http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
* For version with the Installer:
Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
* For the zipped version:
Unzip all the files into a folder of your choice.

Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note: to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 and one blank line at the bottom.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoControlPanel"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoControlPanel"=dword:00000000

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes.

See if you can at least get to the Control Panel now.
OK, the computer is working today for some reason, but it will stop working soon.
Anyway, we've managed to get a hijackthis log, of the computer when it's not in safe mode.

See what you make of this,

Going to try a system restore now
Hope it fixes it. Notice anything strange about the log?
Not seeing anything malicious. How did you make out with system restore? Also, did you run the reg script I had posted? Can you get to the Control Panel now?
can't test the script thing at the moment, because the computers decided to work for a bit >_> It would be pointless trying it just now, when control panel is so easily opened. Give it a few hours, and everything will disappear again. He's currently trying a system restore. (thanks again for helping us out) I'll let you know how it goes
wouldn't let me reformat for some reason :/ It has the restore points, but says something about not letting me restore to any point. Would you agree that a reformat is needed?
Hmm…you could try the Windows file checker. Click Start->Run… Type in: sfc /scannow You may need the XP disc. This will check and repair any Windows system files if that is the issue. It certainly won't do any more harm here. The other option before a format is to post over at the link I gave you earlier. This forum is for Malware issues which I don't think is the case here. You could post your issue over there, the guys in there are excellent and if they can't fix it….well, then maybe format. Good luck, Dave
Hi Dargoroth,

Ax has pointed out something that I missed in your HJT log. I apologize and we'll try to deal with that here now.

Appears to be DownX trojan.

http://spywarefiles.prevx.com/spywarefiles…C=IJHI032793135

Let's get rid of that file and see if we can get a deeper scan.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:

C:\program files\internet explorer\Down(2).exe

Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

—————————————————————————————————-

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt – please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Again, my apologies for shuffling you around the forums here.

Dave
Ran Killbox, and did as instructed, so hopefully that has gone.

Okay a couple of things going on here now. Looks like you got the down.exe file.

You installed and second Antivirus, AVG. This will only cause more issues here….system slowdown, conflicts, errors, false positives, ect…Please remove or at least disable one of them.

A couple of files I would like to upload and check.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org, click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

C:\WINDOWS\serivce.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Intel.DLL

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

If Jotti is too busy you can try these.

These 2 entries here indicate that you may be having hard drive issues here too.

C:\found.001
C:\found.000

Those are recovered files/folders from running chkdsk and may be indicating a hardware failure. But let's try to make sure you're clean first before moving to that….just wanted to note it here. Let me know on those other 2 files what is found.

Thanks,
Dave
