Hi there, I recently told my neighbour about how your forum helped me get the virus off my computer and they asked if I could get your help with theirs. It started out having a black background with a red box saying "Your computer is in danger". You can't edit the display properties to change it. It also redirects you when you try to visit a website by clicking any links. It also had installed some bogus antispyware program. I tried using the self help to get rid of the problem, but I was only able to solve some of the problems. The background is gone, with the web tab back now in the display properties, but you still can't edit the background image for the desktop. The webpage link redirection is still happening, and the program was uninstalled. I tried running the registry fix from kellys-corner to allow background pages. but it doesn't seem to work. I should add that this computer is XP tablet pc edition, so I'm wondering if some of the registry entries are slightly different. Anyhow, I did my best, but I think I need an expert now. I will post the new hjt log in the post below this. I appreciate the help you guys give. Thanks. Josh

Hello and welcome to the forum

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Enable Teatimer

Open Spybot
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident.
Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:

Hi Thanks for the info. I'm trying to get it to work. The problem I'm having is that in safe mode, AVG runs off the edges of the screen so I can't tell if the checkboxes are all checked or not :( I'm going to run it and hope it works out. I'll post the log later today.
Ok, I'm back. I did everything you said. But it didn't save a log of my AVG scan even though my settings say it should've. But this is what it found: Downloader.TSUpdate.o Downloader.PurityScan.eg Downloader.Agent.bls Downloader.Agent.bls Downloader.PurityScan.eh Trojan.Kolweb.s All were quarantined successfully. I'll post the new HJT log in a moment.

With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, combofix.txt. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick while its running. That may cause it to stall
Ok, I'll try that today. I just got a message from norton on that machine saying that this file: O4 - Startup: .lnk = C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmapibx32.exe is a virus, but that Norton can't do anything about it. Should I go into safe mode and delete it? Also, the desktop background properties are still locked. I'll give you an update after I try the next steps you suggested. Thanks for the help. Josh
I hope the combofix worked completely. Norton was trying to block it after the reboot. Here is the log:

If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, We cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service. Also, we are aware of the implications of a setup like this. We are sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). We are aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. We do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail us about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita. Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware. Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 10Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample. Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception. Read more about this in our privacy policy. If you do not want your files to be distributed, please do not send them at all.
