Heres what I have done with this. When this first happened I looked for anti spy-ware to get rid of this issue. This is before coming across your forum. At that time I downloaded the stopzilla spyware thinking it would get rid of the pop ups and web-page take over. It did stop the popups but the home page was still blank. When I saw the antivir gear on the second report with smitfraudfix I then decided to get rid of the stopzilla which I unistalled and then just proceded to find and delete the items that smitfraud had listed and found. I then ran the smitfraud fix run down below. At this time as stated I lost the background of my desktop and then ran a scan. That particular scan I can no longer find, but then I tried running a second today in safe mode with the same settings and now cant save a report. I save a pic of what was found. So hope this worked or I can try to run a report again. thanks for replying. With AVG Anti-Spyware, if you click on the Infections icon, then it will show you all the items in Quarrantine and you can remove them that way. Just click Select All then Remove Finally Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I removed the files as you stated and the computer is running normally. I had nortens anti virus and webroots spy sweeper but thought I removed both. I am now running Mcafee for both. Is this something I should return to or is mcafee reliable enough to do both?

We need to remove the symantec / norton's that are left over.

To completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus?
Problem: The solution to many problems with Symantec AntiVirus is to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus, then re-install. You can use these instructions to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus.

Solution: In order to completely uninstall Symantec AntiVirus and all related components you need to follow these instructions.
Note: This procedure will remove all Symantec products, not just Symantec AntiVirus.

1.Click on Start | Settings | Control Panel
2.In the control panel double-click on Add / Remove Programs
3.Look through the list of installed programs for any item that says either "Norton" or "Symantec" or "LiveUpdate". (for example "Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition" or "Norton AntiVirus 2000")
4.For each "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate" item, select the item and click Add / Remove. Follow the instructions, and click Yes or Yes to all when prompted.
When you are done there should be no items in the list that say "Norton", "Symantec", or "LiveUpdate".
5.Click OK to close the Add / Remove Programs window.
6.Reboot your computer if it hasn't already automatically rebooted.
7.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus (or c:\Program Files\Norton) folder.
8.Delete the c:\Program Files\Symantec folder.
9.Delete the c:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared folder.

If uninstalling Symantec AntiVirus using Add / Remove Programs does not work, you can use the directions on this Symantec website to manually remove all elements of Symantec Antivirus from your computer.

After the above:

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.
I did a remove on a couple of remaining programs and also deleted the folders except for the shared folder. I have and error message stating "cannot delete symlcnet.dll: Access denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

There was an error to the link for manual removal. Just a question are you looking at the last line marked 023 and is there any other markers your looking at. I find this very interesting. And also thanks for helping. I don't think I mentioned it before but sharing your knowledge is a great thing for someone to do. Thanks
You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Enable Teatimer

Open Spybot
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident.
Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer
Click on Mode, select Default mode
Close Spybot

Next:

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find gusvc
Right click and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service
Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type"
in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Do the same if listed for:
Symantec Core LC

Exit the Services utility.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Google Desktop Search

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I found gusvc as google update service in the service. list. I disabled it but it did not come up on the scan. The computer booted fine and is running fine.

You can remove any programs / Tools I had you install. Use Add/Remove Programs to remove if listed there otherwise just delete them and empty recycle bin.

Here's my usual all clean post

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Using IE-SPYAD to help block unwanted sites and activities

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.
