Hi morrisjf1 and welcome to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • NOTE:Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.
In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start, if possible.

—————————————

I need you to rename Hijackthis because I suspect that you may have the Vundo infection that can hide some entries in your log.
  • Please go to the folder where you saved Hijackthis.exe:
  • Right-click on it, then select Rename.
  • Name it something like: FindVundo.exe (or whatever you want) - Just make sure to keep the .exe part.
—————————————

Download and Run ComboFix
  • Download this file from below:
    Here
  • Disconnect from the Internet, than disable your Anti-virus and any real-time Anti-spyware monitors that are running.
  • Then double click Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log, run by the newly named HJT.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.
ok first off… thank you dave for your assistance… i downloaded the combofix, disabled my mcafee… then tried to run the combo fix… I got two errors. I screen capped them….

this first one recurred probably 4/5 times in a row while combofix was trying to run its process….

[external image: Posted Image]

then this error comes up at the end, and it errors out

[external image: Posted Image]
Thanks Dave. I renamed it to "FindVundo.exe" and then executed it… here are the two logs…

Okay great, that confirms the infection. I would still like to run combofix.

It sounds like Regedit.exe is either missing or in the wrong place. Let's see if we can find it.

Open Notepad, copy and paste the text in the code box below into Notepad. Save as findfile.bat. Save as Type: All Files.
@ECHO OFF
If exist Report.txt Del Report.txt
ECHO Working…….
For /F "TOKENS=*" %%g IN ('dir /s /a /b C:\Windows\regedit.exe'
) Do @echo "%%~g" %%~zg %%~tg >>report.txt 2>nul
start notepad Report.txt & exit
Now double click findfile.bat and copy the contents of the Notepad window that opens back here in your reply.

EDIT: I changed the batch file as there was an error.
Hmmm :scratch: interesting. That's the right size, date, and location for that file. I don't understand why combofix won't run it, maybe corrupt, or something else I'm not aware of is going on. Can you try this:

You may need to enable hidden files and folders. To do so:

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

There should be another copy of regedit.exe in this location.

C:\Windows\Service Pack Files\i386

Using Windows Explorer copy regedit.exe in C:\Windows\Service Pack Files\i386 to the C:\windows folder.

Click start->Run…-> type in regedit and see if the registry editor opens. If so then try running Combofix again.

Let me know how you make out and if you have any questions.
Okay we'll go to plan B here, or is it C now?

Please download
VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click Yes
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the Scan for Vundo button when VundoFix appears at reboot.
Hi Dave… I feel compelled to apologize for my computer being such a pain…

I ran VundoFix… it cleaned ALOT out… but it doesnt get everything… it starts a viciscious cycle where it restarts i rescan it finds the same files tries to remove, has to restart etc… the files are abadd.ini and ddaba.dll … there's also a very quick message that pops up each time i scan and says something about the lsass.exe file, but its too quick for me to read…

there is no vundofix.txt that appears…

here's the hijackthis log…

i'm heading out for a couple hours to get something to eat… i'll do whatever you need me to as soon as i get bacck… again, thanks for everything!
Yes, you are heavily infected here. I want to run an online scan with Kaspersky. It will likely take a while. Something you may want to start at bed tonight and let run through the night. Kaspersky does not fix anything it finds, only identifies. This will hopefully give us a better idea of what we're dealing with.

Using Internet Explorer, click on Kaspersky Online Scanner * Click 'Accept' in the window that pops up.
* You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click on the information bar and select Install ActiveX Control if so. This may happen more than once. That is OK. You also may get a warning from your Windows Firewall. You can tell it to unblock.
* The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
* Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
* Now click on 'Scan Settings'
* In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
o Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
* Click 'OK'
* Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
* Now click on the 'Save Report As…' button:
* Make sure it says Save as a text file - change it if not
* Save the file to your desktop.
Please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
unbelievable… 3 hours into the scan (95%) it just shut down internet explorer… it had detected 4 viri in 8 files but I didnt look to see what they were (or if kapersky does even tell me)…
ok… tried it again over night… it worked… horray.

Hi,

I would still really like to be able to let Combofix have a run at this one. I've posted for help from the developer on this issue but in the meantime let's remove your current version, and any other version you may have, and download the latest version. Try running it again and let me know how you make out. If you get the same error there's no need to repost screen shots or anything. Just say "did the same thing".

Remember to remove you current versions first.

Post that log in your next reply with a new HijackThis log.
Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall
Note 2: Remember to re-enable your Anti-virus and Anti-spyware before reconnecting to the Internet.
