My home page has been replaced with a page called "Security Center" with advertising for Virus Heal and AntiSpyware Shiled. I cannot replace it with my usual home page. I use Internet Explorer. Also, a "Security Toolbar 7.1 has been installed and I cannot remove it. There are continuing pop-ups advising me that my computer is infected with viruses and advising me to download certain removal software. One virus mentioned is W32.Myzor.FK@yf. There is also a blinking blue shield with a question mark in my system tray which flashes between the blue shield with a question mark and a red shield with an X. My HijackThis log is as follows. Can you help? Thank you.

hi ctatty,

thats all bogus stuff. they find virus/malware on your computer so you download their software (for money). to remove it.

do this:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop:

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
——————————

copy/paste the rest of this in to notepad and save it somewhere so you can read it in safe mode:

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.

* If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
* Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
* Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
* Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
* Login on your usual account.

while in safe mode:

1) Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. It will create a file named: c:\rapport.txt
save the log file from the search somewhere.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2) Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

it will generate another report after the "clean option runs" save it somewhere.
exit smitfraud using the q option (quite)

look here:
C:\Program Files
and delete the folder :Video ActiveX Access
———————————————
reboot normally, run ad aware and post a new hjt log and the two logs form the smitfraud, search and clean.

shelf life
Hello Shelf Life, thank you for your help. I followed the instructions and all went well. I did not find a folder to delete named: Video ActiveX Access in C:Program Files. The new logs are:

When I restarted this morning a warning popped up that reads: "SDTrayApp.exe - Application Error" The body of the warning says: "The instruction at 0x7c911404 referenced memory at 0xfffffff8. The memory coul not be read. Click on OK to terminate the program"

When I click "OK" the message appears again and I can't seem to get it to go away.

Again, thank you for your help. ctatty
