Appreciate your help!!!!
Hi Moonbeam,

What program(s) told you that you were infected?
If you have the log or details of the infected file(s) please post them in your next response.

————————————————————————

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

————————————————————————

Next, please download and install the latest version of HijackThis from here:
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTInstall.exe

Once you have downloaded the new version, remove the old version:
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:

cmd /c del /f "C:\Documents and Settings\Pooh\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\Security\HijackThis.exe"

Also delete any shortcuts you have.

Then run the new version's installer HJTInstall.exe and follow the prompts.
After installing, HijackThis will open automatically but close the program for now.

————————————————————————

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply
————————————————————————

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.
Tried running the Deckard's System Scanner but it encountered an error 3 times. Downloaded it twice - same thing.

Since I couldn't get those reports, am including another HJT log. Also I don't have the log from AVG but that is what first found the zlob - it was moved into the virus vault since it could not be healed.

Here is the SmitFraudFix report:

Hi Moonbeam,

I'm sorry to hear you had troubles with DSS, what error(s) did you get? Can you describe what happens when you run it?

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Now please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please now try running DSS once more and see if it works. If it doesn't work, then post an uninstall list and HijackThis log:

Open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager… button, then press Save list…
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix report, and either both DSS reports or the uninstall list and new HijackThis log.

Hi Moonbeam,

We need to temporarily disable AVG Antispyware's active protection as it may interfere with some changes we need to make:
Open AVG Antispyware and make sure the Status screen is selected
Next to Resident Shield press Change state so that the status reads inactive
Close AVG Antispyware

Download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.
Then, navigate to the HijackThis folder with Windows Explorer:
C:\Program Files\Hijackthis
Right-click the HijackThis program file HijackThis and rename it to scan
If you did it right it should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
If you have a shortcut to HijackThis on your Desktop, it will no longer work, so please delete it and make a new one by right-clicking scan.exe and choosing Send To->Desktop (create shortcut)

Then please make a new HijackThis log and post it along with the ComboFix report.

Hi Moonbeam,

Most of the programs you have disabled using MSConfig are fine, however you may wish to reconsider disabling this one:
C:\Windows\SMINST\RecGuard.exe

On HP computers, Recguard prevents the deletion or corruption of the WinXP Recovery Partition. Without it enabled, it is possible to knock that completely out and force the customer to send the PC back to HP for a re-image, possibly at the customer's expense

We also need to re-enable the Java Runtime entry because we will be removing it:

Next press Start->Run, type msconfog into the box and press OK
Select the Startup tab and place a checkmark next to this entry:

SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe …..

As per the above, place a checkmark next to this entry if you wish:

RecGuard C:\Windows\SMINST\RecGuard.exe

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 and remove it. This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 2) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You have Firefox 1.5 installed - this is now out of date and a security risk - please uninstall it via Add/Remove Programs and download the latest version from here

————————————————————————

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Hey Silver, in case I forgot to say it, thanks for all your help so far! I did everything you said - removed old Java, installed new one; removed old FireFox, installed new one, changed the start up service RecGuard for the HP computer; and removed viewpoint (I already had VLC on it anyway!!!). I've also pasted the Kaspersky Scan report and a new HJT log.

Hi Moonbeam, That all looks fine. Kaspersky found infected files, but they relate to the SmitfraudFix tool as well as System Restore which we'll clean shortly so nothing to worry about. How is your computer running now?
Everything seems to be running ok. No more popup dialogue boxes from AVG telling me they have found .zlob. Computer runs pretty smoothly, which it did even when it first was found. I never really had any problems - except for AVG finding the .zlob and then an online scan also found it. I've had viruses on other machines that caused it to run slow and act up in other ways, this has not done that. I just wanted to make sure to get it clean. MB
Hi Moonbeam,

That's great, some important final steps:

You should now delete ComboFix.exe, DSS.exe, SmitfraudFix.exe and the SmitfraudFix folder from your Desktop.

Also delete these folders:
C:\QooBox
C:\SmitfraudFix

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up… and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

At this stage I think your machine is now clean :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You have plenty of protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
Silver, THANKS!!! Deleted the files, set up the automatic updates and did the restore point and then deleted past restore points. Will look into the MVPS Hosts, & Spyblaster which I do have on my desktop. Thanks a lot for your time, patience & expertise! I really appreciate it.
